Hi guys

I published the first article for ADSL. If you invest the time to read it (it is worth it I think), can you please let me know what you think, and if you discovere any mistakes in the article please email me. I researched the prices etc, but problems can still slip trough.

My aim with these articles is to supply information about ADSL in South Africa. I would like them to be factually sound and objective in nature, and to serve as a resource to ADSL users and possibly the South African media. I would like IT journalist that are writing an article about ADSL in South Africa to visit MyADSL first since it is the most respected source available on the net. High hopes I know, but we have many knowledgeable members that can easily match any other articles currently available. If you feel you can make a contribution by writing an article, please do so and forward it to me. These articles can be anything to do with ADSL…as long as it is well researched and factually sound. It would be great if you guys can assist with this section. I would hate to have to do all the writing myself.

The site looks fine to me. Sounds like you somehow got a cached page…very strange indeed. My friend in Oman has the same problem, but he could never view the ‘new look’ site.

Your article was great - but in restrictions for SA you left out port prioritisation. But its fine coz you explained about that in the first paragraphs.

I still think that the best bet is that if we start our own S.A file sharing community...it would probably be easy to open a channel in mirc where people ask eachother for files and start dcc send sessions with eachother.(I dont know how well this would work coz mirc has really bad port prioritisation). Does anyone know of any file sharing apps which use unprioritised ports. Msn works well but microsoft is shutting it down in 2 weeks coz of security issues[V]

You got a typo on Earthlink.

BTW you may want to look at a company in the US called www.covad.net for closer comparison to Telkom. I have just returned from 2 years in San Francisco where I had their TeleSurfer Link service: 384/128 @ $19.95 for 4 months then $39.95 with no contract, self installation and free modem after $99 mail in rebate. Although technically slower than Telkom in reality much faster.

I tele-commute to a London based company and use MS Visual Source Safe via VPN, worked fine with covad, here I can only use it after hours and even then it is incredibly slow. During office hours it simply does not work.

I tried Earthlink first and although faster than Telkom their customer service was far worse and I never got it working at all.

It would be interesing to see some third world countries added which would probably make it easier to see how South Africa realistically relates across the board, right now its being compared to first world countries. Although i'm not sure if/what third world countries have ADSL.

Kenya comes to mind. The first in Africa with ADSL if I'm not mistaken.

Korea probaly has one of the best services in the world.
In terms of internet access they are far from third world.

I'd say South Korea is far from Third World in terms of most things, as for the North, well nobody really knows what's going on there.

Going back to those countries you mentioned,do you perhaps now off hand what their service is like and is it better than our lousy one?
