Hi folks

As you know MyADSL is growing at a rapid rate which also means that our bandwidth usage has increased dramatically. Over the last month we have used a healthy 112.934 Gigs. We already have compression enabled on our server and we also put all downloads and other large files on our international server, which means not much could be done about this traffic. We were not keen to move MyADSL overseas and I am glad to inform you that Hetzner has decided to reduce our bandwidth cost. This will enable us to keep MyADSL local for the foreseeable future.

Thanks a bunch to Hetzner for accommodating MyADSL and for their great service.

Regards,

RPM

RPM is this October's usage [to 31Oct] or how much we've used this month?

Either way, awesome going RPM :D!
Hi Dominic Rooney

We get billed on the 17th of each month. This usage is therefore for the 31 days from 17 Oct - 17 November. I will provide all stats for MyADSL at the end of November...

Telkom thinks 3 GB is enough for everybody ;)

Any help is always welcome!

Seeing as Telkom is hard capping local I don't see why the costs should be high for myAdsl, I for one vote to move it overseas. We can't risk this with the local rates as I think we need to keep Telkom on their *whatever* and the media and general public informed...

mnn in Telkom money thats like R8000 for a friendly little community site.

Gawd, and Papi doesnt buy into the fact that his company overcharges us for bandwidth. Papi, you are either an idiot or a lier.

Thank you Hetzner!

112GB.. nice.. that would cost around $10 in the US :)

I used to host my domain overseas, (UK Based)but a had alot of small little downtimes BECAUSE of Telkom probs etc, which resulted in no axess to my site or mail.... I would rather MyAdsl stay local......

of the 112GB, what amount of traffic is from search engines? How about blocking them on the local site and create a mirror site overseas which allows them to search.

That should reduce the local site hits and traffic by a massive number and increase overseas bandwidth

We've used most of the hosting companies in SA and I can affirm that Hetzner is the best of the bunch when it comes to the balance between QOS and cost, and they've always gone out of their way to accomodate us. Thanks Hetzner - if only there were more like you... and thanks MyADSL - you're the only thing that's driving Telkom to change it's evil ways.

Telkom to pay us to have broadband soon.

My point is made. Local sites will bring the cost of broadband down. The more myadsl and other SA sites pay, the less us viewers of those sites will have to pay.
The boring math.
Market for ADSL=100 thousand users at 1,5 gb per month @ R100 per gb=R15 million. Ninety percent download from overseas. Change to 90 percent local sites beeing viewed by S Africans means uploaders such as MYADSL will contribute 90 percent of the R15 mill, leaving R1,5 million a month for home viewers to pay for=R15 pm each. Increase # users to 600,000 as Telkom plans and they can give broadband away.

Thanks to the myadsl web hoster, now if only you could host GOOGLE, Telkom might even pay us to have broadband!
