I think it was more of a marketing ploy than anything else. hetzner used to
be famous until recently for "unlimited bandwidth" as a marketing gimmick,
but they have now slipped in bandwidth limits into their hosting. I have a
site with them and they did not even notify me that have changed for
unlimited to limited! Not very nice of them.

As I say in almost every post - there is no such thing as unlimited
bandwidth. It unfortunately seems that most people on this forum simply
don't want to accept the fact. Look at all the whiners that belive there
should be no cap on adsl. ;-)

I think the my*.co.za forums is probably the biggest general "net connected" community forum in South Africa at the moment. I would support an advertising initiative, but run at myadsl.co.za's initiative to provide local service providers a competitive platform to advertise. This will help small companies and consultants make a living. Perhaps a limit on the number of ads that a single provider can purchase so as to make the system fair. We wouldn't want all the big companies to completely take over.

I also believe that a "sponsoring" system might work well in the short term too.

I know quite a few community sites that work using both methods, advertising and donations. I disagree that donations should be completely "anonymous" though... Perhaps a system where a member's forum tag gains an additional "Contributor" tag would be worthwhile to investigate.

I mean, if someone's paying for advertising, they expect their advertising to be visible. If someone donates, a simple "myadsl Contributor" tag gives the donator some level of feel-good too...

Hi folks

I have just received my final account from Webonline. It now stands at R 7226.56 because of the traffic used during the last few days. I tried to negotiate to cover the full first invoice for traffic used (just over R 5100-00) but they did not see their way clear to accept that offer. I will therefore have to consider means to cover this expense but I do not expect the members to feel responsible in the least. It is my responsibility and I will deal with it. It might however involve discrete advertising which is does not seem to be unanimously accepted. I wanted to keep this site completely add free with no commercial connections and happily covered the monthly hosting fees of around R 565-00 per month (for myadsl and mybroadband), correspondence and phone call costs to ICASA, Telkom etc and other costs incurred in my dealings with various organizations on behalf of MyADSL. Unfortunately I did not foresee such a tremendous expense and will have to recover some of these funds at least.

I am certain this will blow over soon and through all of this my main concern was to keep the site available for members to use and discuss matters. I am currently also looking into creating a system with a redundant forum to ensure the best possible service to members. I appreciate all the replies and support regarding MyADSL. Please keep them coming as they will ultimately dictate my actions.

rpm, many of us really would like to help you with this problem. We understand that you do not want to accept funds from the myadsl members, which I respect, but can't we contribute just this once? If 100 of us contribute R50, you'll be nearly there.

I'd even support Mark on this one.

What better way to show ICASA and TELKOM that this is not all hot air? Let them see this disgruntled minority put there money (whats left after the Telkom bill that is) where their mouths are.

Post the banking details for donations RPM, at least once off if not a sticky.

I just have issue with hosting the MyADSL site overseas. Speed! It will make the site a little slower not to mention unreachable if you are a capped ADSL user. How strange that you can host a website overseas for cheaper than you can in South Africa!!!! ?????

I am seriously peeved at the situation! RPM, I am with the other guys who offered to help financially.

i'm fairly new to the forum but me thinks that there's general consensus that the myadsl community would like to do something to keep the site going...

Please let us pay u a wee bit each. I realise the predicament you are in but this site will lose some of its tremendous appeal to me if there are ads there. Where do the ads end. It started with none, now potentially some, then .....???

RPM, now is not a time to fall on your sword financially. This forum remains under your administration and guidance, however it has evolved into a community of people as dedicated as yourself to seeing broadband delivered to the SA consumer.
You have given so much to this community, please allow us members to give something back to you. If you are loathe to post banking details, then create a sponsors topic where people can mark their willingness to sponsor by posting, and you can privately email each poster. Whatever happens though, allow us to support this great community that you founded.

There seems to be two topics for discussion here.

1. Addition to ICASA complaint that it is cheaper to host a site in the US for South Africans than it is to host locally. PS RPM, when are the public hearings so I can book my leave.

2. We have to hunt RPM down and shower him with money seeing as he is so reluctant to accept donations. If anyone knows where he lives we can go and drop small brown bags of cash on his doorstep and he wont be able to return or rebuke it.[:D]

Hi folks

I must again say that it is wonderful to see all the support. I have opened a MyADSL bank account and have deposited some funds into it. I have also paid for the current hosting for the next few months. The only concern now is the Webonline bill… After we have received 100 votes in the poll I will look at the options which the members felt are best. As for the small brown bags, I will have to be very careful for ones from certain individuals or companies :-)

I can also inform you that although the site is hosted internationally I am still using a South African company. I think it is important for MyADSL to keep on supporting SA businesses even if it is more expensive. I have been treated really well by the guys from Afrihost as well…they really helped where they could.

Question : What is your/the definition of discrete advertising. Doesn't that sort of defeat the object of advertising?

Maybe if this could be defined it will lay my "Adverts are there to give you time to get another beer" attitude.

By discrete I mean no DHTML rolldowns and other screen obstructing effects, no pop-ups, pop-unders or other window-open effects etc. Basically simply banner ads. No-ads will obviously be the ideal and that I what I have done up to now, but with the unexpected costs of late it might not be feasible to maintain that policy.

Thanks for the reply RPM, just as a side item I think you are doing a great job insofar as this has become a knowledge base as opposed to a forum.

Thanks for the clarity and as I can see from above it would seem like you will endevour to keep the irritating ads (Seen some insurance ads lately on lots of sites?) off the site. If this is the price that must be paid so be it. If at all possible though please let us send you money on an anonymous donation system.
The peanut gallery will rest his case.

Despite what I said in previous posts I will continue to support this site as it would be futile to try and find a more knowledgeable community for broadband in SA.

rpm, just as a point of interest, what was the traffic like? And what was the rate per Mb?

Also, I note that myadsl.co.za doesn't make use of any kind of HTTP compression, which for an HTML rich forum site can easily save up to 50-70% in traffic. Definately things to consider...

I used around 10+ Gigs of traffic during May, with just over 1 million hits. I think the rate per M was around 50c/M, but I did not receive a full invoice yet so I am not certain. I will post all the details as soon as I receive an invoice and all the logs.
