MyBB guide to quitting smoking

I'm on about 5/6 months now, kinda lost track after the first couple months. You should take note of all those times that you automatically light up. Then look at ways of avoiding or being aware that you are in that situation. Like I drive a lot so I light up as soon as I get out of town. Since I was aware of that, I knew that the psychological and physical urge to light up would be strongest at that time. So I was able to say to myself, I'll be at my destination in 2hours...eventually, it subsides. The one situation that I have not been able to remove those urges is when I drink. But its weird, when I start drinking, its really strong...when I'm legless, there is no urge.
The problem for me was not staying off it, it was the personality change.

Yup, whats the longest you quit mike? Mine is just over a year. Still my personality did not go back to calm and relaxed after a year
About a year previously, and more recently about 3 months. Wish there was a pill I could pop - will try the Zyban/Champix route next.

Good initially but you don't wanna be on that stuff for more than 3 months hey, it never helped with the personality either. I was on zyban for 4 months until i stopped taking it. Mood never came right in those first 4 months and it is not recommended to take it for more than 6 months.

Insane to use it to stop though, within 3-4 days you hate the taste of a cigi.

Zyban help my first quit. That lasted almost 4 years.

Champix also works. Not as bad as zyban with regards to the side effects. Only side effect I had on champix was nausea in the morning.

I can understand how it would be a personality change initially. I had a complete personality change the first couple times I tried to quit, the last time I actually started because I couldn't control my temper. But put things into perspective. At some point you should learn to control your temper. I have learned that I have a short temper, and if I don't control it, I'll be back to square one. Since I've stopped smoking, I've broken a couple squash rackets(R1500 a racket), my new LED 23" monitor and almost my car...these are isolated incidents over the last 6months or so when something just made me rage. When you get angry, count to 10, count sheep or something. Smoking chemically controlled certain things so we didn't have to worry about it.(I haven't done any research on the , its what I think :) )

Its all psychological, you have to figure out how you would control your temper from all over again. Its like being in a wheelchair for 10years and then someone saying you should get out the chair and run a marathon. Hope this helps.

So after 3 weeks of not smoking, I am back to a pack a day :/ Guess I will try again sometime soon.. after the stress at work has died down a bit.

Don't worry, me 2. I will wait for things to calm down before trying again. Way to much stress right now.

I am also off the wagon - just couldn't stop myself anymore. Just too much kak the last three weeks

I'm still going strong :)

New research regarding personality change:

Aside from the well-known health benefits of quitting smoking, new research suggests that people who kick the habit may improve their personalities as well.

Researchers from the University of Missouri found that smoking is a trigger for impulsivity (acting without thinking) and neuroticism (often being emotionally negative and anxious) among adults under the age of 35. Those who stop smoking, however, can lose these unfavourable traits and improve their personality, the study suggested.

One month. But had a lus today.

Now I need to work on my drinking. Friday morning (had my drinking boots on Thursday night) I swore I would give up drinking for a while. Friday night back in the pub. (I'm there for the company ;) )

My dad had a major stroke on Friday night. He is paralyzed on his right side and can hardly talk. It was incredibly hard to see him in that state today.

This was all smoking related. I realised today smoking is really no joke. It has scared the **** out of me. You don't realise it until you see your old man lying there and can hardly talk or move half his body.

I have made it my personal mission that within the next month I will stop smoking, and forever. I refuse to let something so stupid **** up my life that way.

I owe it to my kids, and most importantly my dad. I promised him at his bed side today that I will quit. I will keep that promise.

I still haven't had a smoke :D

I hope you can quit this time. What really helped me was seeing my neighbour. I used to run past his place in the mornings or afternoon and he would be standing outside smoking. Now he doesn't smoke anymore and every time I see him, he is walking around with an oxygen mask.

His walking is also limited because the pipe/wire that goes from the mask to the oxygen machine is also not very long. AFAIK he is somewhere in his 50s and his condition was also caused by years of smoking.

Urk that sucks dude, on the one hand its great that it will get you to stop smoking. On the other its terrible that it happened to your dad.
One downside though is that if you dont stop after this then you probably never will.
