MyBB Motorcycle Owners Thread (2nd gear)

I feel bad for blokes with the “my missus” excuse/issue in many more ways than one.

My wife was against me riding at first as well. I understood where it came from though, she had lost a couple of people to motorbike accidents. Took her time to realise that getting on a motorbike != death

I guess it’s different when you were always riding and your wife met you like that.

Starting it up later in life has midlife crisis written all over it and I’d agree a much higher chance of potential death.

these BS weather forecasts are really starting to mess with my mojo. Used car again today and again no thunderstorm typhoon.

Now you're making me feel sad :)
Luckily, riding the bike will resolve that to a large extent.

Nah, I got into it initially cause of traffic - still saving 2 hours a day. And she now supports it due to improved mood.

Keeping the thread going..

The problem is caring about the weather and switching to the car for no good reason.

Just gear up.

I very seldom ride in full gear, I wear my boots and bike jeans and so on, but if I wear a jacket when I get to where Im going I have to change my shirt. I run very hot. SO rather just put along and leave teh jacket and gloves at home. Its a Harley anyway. Hardly Dangerous haha

So driving to work yesterday morning, a guy on a large KTM came cruising through traffic.

About 2km later I saw a prosthetic leg lying on the shoulder of the highway, which was fairly odd.

About 500m later, I saw the biker stopped on the right shoulder, climbing off his bike with one very empty pants leg. Seems he’d lost a leg somewhere.

Remember guys, ATLATT.

Can anyone recommend a shop or private mechanic that can check valve clearances on a 2011 BMW 650 GS? Centurion area would be preferable but I'm willing to travel further for anyone reputable that's not charging an arm or a leg. I was due to have it done with Lester from BikeStyle but he's closed shop and is apparently in the process of emigrating.

They are the best people for the job and likely no more or less expensive than any private while doing a solid job.

BMW cap labour charges by a guideline so you can get a quote up front with no surprises.

Went to test drive a Kawasaki 636 and the Z1000 the other day.

The 636 was fantastic. Nice and punchy for a 600cc. I managed to open up all the way, although I asked them to leave it in the slowest mode possible because I don't want to crash it on a test ride.

Went back and tried the 1000 in the same default performance mode, and it scared me a little. It's very powerful and the front became quite light at about 80-90% throttle even in 6th. I'm not used to the front wheel starting to wobble around like that and had to remind myself to dig my legs into the tank properly and stop gripping with my hands.

It was a gentle reminder how complacent I have become riding a small thumper around.

I want to test a gsx 1000 next. I suspect that it might be too powerful for me still and I would need to learn the bike properly and brush up on my skills if I ever decided to buy one. I've been riding for 18 years but nothing that I've felt wanted to kill me.

Any GSXR 1000 owners out here with some ideas of reliability and cost of ownership? I'll look at something worth around 10k on the clock.

K6 GSX-R1000 owner here. Bought my bike in 2009 on 3809km, it's now sitting somewhere north of 50k km. I service my bike myself (no warranty to void) and have since I bought it. I've only ever had to replace tyres, brake pads, batteries and front fork seals (and iridium spark plugs, like once or twice or something) as non-service items. Only issues I've had is the pair valve which I deleted. The motors are basically bullet proof. Although, I don't think my bike has had a hard life.

Normal servicing items are usually oil and oil filter. I have a washable/reusable BMC filter and the iridium plugs last very long- I'll probably check them to see if they are within spec for the next service, doubt I'll be replacing them though. My bike is due an annual service so I'll check what the servicing costs are against what needs to be done at the next service (if you're looking for dealership pricing on services, that's a nope from me). There's a valve clearance check in there somewhere that I had done, but it was a few years ago and I can't really remember what I paid for it- it's one of the few things I don't do myself. It wasn't too expensive though and I think it's something would have be done on most bikes anyway.

From what I can remember, the GSX 1000 uses the old k5/k6 motor (or maybe a slightly retuned version of it, not sure on the details) unless they've changed that with the new GSX- I haven't been following the development of the GSX to be honest.

Was standing on the upper level of Bru House yesterday and I counted 17 bikes with sidecars on a morning ride. I did not realise that there were enough in a province to start an actual club.

BMW S1000 series?

I honestly did not even consider contacting them as I simply assumed I'd be paying the BMW tax but their quote was a little less than half of the next best price I was quoted by a private mechanic that was recommended to me. Thanks for the recommendation! New thread delivers
