MyBB Motorcycle Owners Thread (2nd gear)

I honestly did not even consider contacting them as I simply assumed I'd be paying the BMW tax but their quote was a little less than half of the next best price I was quoted by a private mechanic that was recommended to me. Thanks for the recommendation! New thread delivers

I have found not to judge BMW Dealerships the same as other brands.

My BMW has been the cheapest bike to maintain of all my bikes by a significant margin.

And I always get a courtesy bike too.

BMW S1000 series?
I've had both the R and RR...and if he's worried about the power of the GSX then the R is not going to be great.

But I can say the electronics are fantastic.

Had the RR and never pushed it to max, power jump to a superbike was a bit much.
Swapped to an R, had it now almost 2 years. Fantastic bike. Easy to ride when you want it to, and goes like a beast when you want it to.

Problem is I'm now used to it's power and I want to go back to the RR. Even tho I know it will turn me into a pretzel again.

Good thing BMW has been f##cked by SABS and they can't get clearance to import the new RR.
Was supposed to be on sale in March. October and they still don't have clearance.

Crap.. I was waiting for a new one..

My logic was kind of that the electronics reign it in a bit more and you can run it in the horsepower limited rain mode if you wanted to.

Also the XR which is a little less extreme.

Yes, rain mode restricts to 100hp and has all the electronics at max.
ABS, anti-dive, anti-wheelie, traction control and cornering ABS (which I can vouch for working well). And it disabled the artificial backfiring during downshifts

K6 GSX-R1000 owner here. Bought my bike in 2009 on 3809km, it's now sitting somewhere north of 50k km. I service my bike myself (no warranty to void) and have since I bought it. I've only ever had to replace tyres, brake pads, batteries and front fork seals (and iridium spark plugs, like once or twice or something) as non-service items. Only issues I've had is the pair valve which I deleted. The motors are basically bullet proof. Although, I don't think my bike has had a hard life.

Normal servicing items are usually oil and oil filter. I have a washable/reusable BMC filter and the iridium plugs last very long- I'll probably check them to see if they are within spec for the next service, doubt I'll be replacing them though. My bike is due an annual service so I'll check what the servicing costs are against what needs to be done at the next service (if you're looking for dealership pricing on services, that's a nope from me). There's a valve clearance check in there somewhere that I had done, but it was a few years ago and I can't really remember what I paid for it- it's one of the few things I don't do myself. It wasn't too expensive though and I think it's something would have be done on most bikes anyway.

From what I can remember, the GSX 1000 uses the old k5/k6 motor (or maybe a slightly retuned version of it, not sure on the details) unless they've changed that with the new GSX- I haven't been following the development of the GSX to be honest.
Thanks so much for the feedback here. These bikes have such road presence and endless power from what I've seen. Lots of high mileage owners complain of paintwork getting easily damaged by boots etc and stickers peeling off. Any experiences in this regard?
BMW S1000 series?
On my short list to drive as well. The red is quite pretty. But yes, this is certainly a bike that could quite easily kill a noob.
Then again could rather just buy an RS and be happier for it all round.

I thoroughly enjoyed my loaner F750GS. But I have my heart set on eventually going fast and having an achy ass after 20 minutes, which is why I'm wanting to try a Superbike for a bit.

Side note: the GSXR 750 doesn't come with ABS at all it seems. Only the 1000. Well worth the extra money I reckon

The RS is all the super bike you need without the discomfort and impracticality.

What do you ride now?

What about the Z800? Since the 1000 was too crazy.

I see now you had both the GSX and the GSX-R mentioned in one post so I’m not sure if that was a typo or on purpose as the one isn’t a super bike at all.

You don’t need a super bike to go fast. And often the alternative is more visceral anyway and feels faster for it.

i ride a gay 2015 Honda NC750X DCT everyday for about 4 and a half years now,
Most boring bike in the world but super reliable and uses almost no fuel
132 000km and going strong like the day i bought it

I never found it to be all that boring in the segment.

Has a good growl and plenty of torque which means it pulls.

Sure not massive on top speeds and generally not pretty but ticks so many boxes.

Probably the main reason I didn’t buy one was because I wanted all the technology trimmings and buying my “Ferrari” of bikes this last round.

I’d have been quite happy with an NC for my daily commute which is sadly where my bike has spent all of its life the last 10,000km or so.

G310R, yet I have ridden big bikes in the past. I think I still have a few months of enjoyment left in it before I get bored. It's lovely to flick around and it is very well balanced.

I was speaking only about the GSXR sorry, that was a typo.

I'd definitely look at the Z900 as an option. The Z800 is nice, but it doesn't grab me like the aggressive stance of the 900/1000. The guy at the dealership said that the Z800 is slightly older technology too and it's a bit heavy. Definitely not off the table though.

I sat on the S1000RR and it's basically the same size as the G310R! I was surprised by how tiny it is. A real pocket rocket. I'm 6ft as well so I feel like a bit of an ogre on the G310R.

i do over 90km everyday to work and back so it made sense to buy NC, and i do not regret it 1 tiny bit. It is the best day to day commuter out there and i dont care what anyone else says, its a fact !!!! :giggle:

But yeah, there are no hard on moments, like many other bikes out there

Aaah okay so already in the BMW Family.

You are right about the Z900 although I wonder what’s the point of the “small” one being near as big as the big one then? Or is it a massive tuning difference.

Having been absolutely off my nuts for the S1000XR and settling on an R1200RS after an unplanned test ride I can only implore you to do the same and go ride both of those.

Not to mention the R1200RS can be picked up for bargains now with the new model arriving soon.

I would also need a very hard push to leave the BMW family after the incredible experience I’ve had dealing with them since making the switch, regardless of bike choice.

Absolutely agreed, it’s an excellent bike for that purpose.

The Frunk is also just pure awesomeness.

My only gripe with mine is with the DCT, which is really awesome in traffic.
But when the fkn battery dies, you can't start the bike at all and need to call for backup :/

Frunk yes, use it everyday for my phones, wallet, lunch etc.
Totally safe, i can fit a 12 pack beer in there as well

im still on my original battery, previous Honda also did 5yrs on its original battery.
Bikes do NOT like sitting around doing nothing in garage, you must use them often and you wont have problems.

Bike's 6 years old, so I guess it was time...
I left the ignition on while I filled up with petrol... pressed start... "cleeek"

Yikes, this morning i forgot to switch off my 2x10w LED spots, 45 minutes later neighbour at work told me, i switched off and started bike, it struggled for a second but then started, i put the battery on a charger for a few hrs, seems fine for now, i just hope a cell isnt damaged, time will tell.
In my experience with cars batteries generally fail on a cold crank start on a winters morning
