MyBroadband downtime

I apologize for the continued problems - we are working on a solution to ensure that this does not happen again in future.
 
Did anyone else experience some downtime a few minutes ago?

Sorry for the intermittent issues. We're working with our host to find a permanent solution.

We have already investigated CloudFlare (registered an account, the whole shebang). We're just looking at all options first before choosing one.

FWIW - I can set you up with a Cloudflare contact to get preferential pricing. Otherwise you could always move to IS and then have protection via Arbor.
 
Maybe we can organize a prize for the person who hits the most database errors? Although we would need another database to record the error hits :D

If you have a dedicated IP block via Afrinic (we did this so that we can move from DC to DC without losing reputation on our IP's) then it's quite simple to just BGP shun the traffic during an attack vector. Arbor is expensive, as in most cases you would need your own appliance within your network. Arbor is no different than Cloudflare and I would think that Cloudflare locally would be around 50K/pm for MyBB (going by the traffic reported from Effective Measures).

With the exception of IS (Arbor) and Cloudflare hosted in Teraco, I do not believe any other hosting company has proper DDoS mitigation in place. I think from an hosting perspective, IS is perhaps most advanced and they are about to roll out Arbor to clients (some bigger clients are on a pilot). Although pricing is not finalised, I think IS is substantially cheaper than Cloudflare.

The interesting part about Cloudflare is that they also provide you with DNS mitigation, whereas Arbor will sit inline with your traffic and then BGP-shun your traffic to their scrubbing sites during an attack. Careful with solutions like Arbor, as you will sign up for a contract which includes limits on the number of attacks per month as well as throughput (so that could really blow up your financials if the contract is not properly set out).
