Hi guys

I was considering if I should put this in the DSTV section but most guys there post about PVR vs Tivo and how Mythbusters need new episodes. Plus here I can hope for some Linux knowledge from the Gurus of my favourite OS.

I have been working with Ubuntu for a while now. Im a geek so I spend a lot of time at my PC which in turn has my wife on my case. I don't really watch TV (I can't be bothered to show up for something when schedule dictates it, Im much more of a "on demand" kinda guy.

But dearest wants DSTV and since she puts up with my obsessions, I will gladly return the favour. Of course, I am looking into ways to get something out of it as well.

My budget is not great (One of the reasons we never got it) so a PVR is out of the question for me. So what I had in mind was to take an oldish PC I have here, slap a TV card in and load Mythbuntu on it. I am pretty confident I can get a recording setup going from the DSTV and stream that back to my file server's abundance of Disc Space and MySQL database. Simple enough.

But I want some opinions on what more I can get out of this. Is there any way to record while watching something else without buying the actual PVR Decoder? The PVR has 2 outputs from what I can see so it splits the signal. Is there another way to do that and have two inputs into the Mythbuntu box?

Basic Setup overview:

Frontend/Backend combo box
----------------------------

3.2GHz P4 HT
1GB DDR2
80GB HDD
256MB Geforce 7600
1x or 2xTV Card to be bought
Network
Mythbuntu

File Server
----------
Core2Duo
2GB DDR2
2 x 750GB HDD
Integrated Graphics
Network
Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop

Any cool ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Regards

Short answer - No.

All Mythbuntu does is capture a signal. So this would have to be something that is possible generally without a PVR decoder.
