Where can I buy an antenna off the shelf? We have a lowish signal to start with (12%, I think), but when it rains, it drops to 2%, and we occasionally lose signal. I just want to improve the signal somewhat - nothing fancy.

I have to say this cantenna thing makes me grin each time I run into it - to think that a simple & cheap container for crisps can solve signal problems on a modem - it amazes me & the person that first used a pringles can should be in a hall of fame somewhere ;)

I have also experiment Pringle can, parbolic reflector ......
My best solution is a omni directional antenna with 3 meter cable cost only R165.

It seems to me that Sentech's signal is easily blocked by certain type of building or roof structure or material.

I use the antenna to reach out 2 meters out of my windows & roof .I have reliable siganl 9 %

only heavy storm and strong wind conditions I lose my signal now.

Alternatively you can get a patch antenna for about R300 if you don't want to fiddle around with old chip containers. Although many said that the patch antenna is useless, it completely sorted out a problem I was having with poor upload throughput, and even though the signal strength didn't improve much the quality of my connection was vastly improved - it seems it increases the quality of your return path signal which in turn increases the response time from the network.

If you want to buy one off the shelf there is a shop in Village Walk Sandton where you can get one immediately - don't know about the rest of the country - have a look at the nowire website, they list the shops.

Only the first batch of patch antennas released onto the market had problems.
Since then they have been fine. I have had great success with mine.

dbnnet, I don't care, Sentech is crap, 56k dialup is more stable/cheaper/faster than Sentech's 128k/256k offering

Maybe....but it's still one up on the reliability of iBust technology...
and that is even when iBurst is working :)

For when my reception is bad I bought a 5m usb extention for R30 and the modem goes out the house.

I disagree on the price, being connected to helkom during the day costs much more.

Hi Noone

The purpose of this forum is to encourage service providers to improve the price & quality of their offerings.

We have to reflect the latest improvements & efforts Sentech have achieved

WE HAVE TO PLAY A FAIR GAME or else will have no influences.

So please put the past (sentiment)behind you,& together We will influence the Telecoms as a whole.
