MyWireless in Durban

ProAsm - Has Sentech tried using a active dipole on the modem for areas just out of the current coverage? this might be of some help to people that are 2 to 3 km outside the current coverage but can "see" the active towers
In the not to distant future (when the dust has settled) we will be setting up a MyWireless playroom at our offices here where the public can come do their thing and test out all the various options.

Looks like Phase 2 rollout is for areas where there will be a very poor return on investment??
Kwazulu Natal
Durban:
Current: Durban North, Broadway South, Seacow Lake, The Bluff, Sunningdale
Planned: Rockford, Overport, Umlazi[xx(], Chartwell[xx(], Saratoga[xx(]
SENTECH why not target areas where the is a more willing subscriber base??
Yup.. in Hillery-Escombe area. No ADSL, No sentech.. All my neighbours are too poor to afford any of it anyway so I doubt they'd cover the area to get like 2 customers.

My modem arrived yesterday and although I have 17%-20% signal strength to base station 36. The yellow indicators on the left hover between 3 and 4 and yet I can't seem to connect to the remote host using the modem dialler.

Does anyone know where exactly the Durban North tower is as I'll connect up my laptop and drive to the tower to check if it is my location. I live in ellis park drive and shouldn't theoretically have any difficulty.

According to tech support last night station 36 is only going live on the 4th which I find hard to believe assuming 36 is Durban North.

The list of Base Stations is on this forum and also check my signature.
36 is Mal Park - Durban North is 60.
The Durban North Tower is at 217 Umhlanga Rocks Drive.

It's on Umhlanga rocks drive, just after the Longwoods traffic lights (if you're coming from town). You want to be on the town side of it, as I gather that that's where the transmitters are pointing.

I have trouble connecting myself... it normally takes three or four tries at least before the tower seems to acknowledge me. I'm on four dots on the modem, around 21% connection.

Well that explains things... I almost have line of site with hypermarket... I'll drive down tonight and give the laptop a try.

Thanks ProAsm

If anyone is interested, Sunningdale tower (102) is working - I'm getting 45% located at somerset park. So far MyWireless is the best thing since sliced bread. If you are looking for a better signal, download ProAsm's mysignal.exe. Using this niffty little tool you can get a better signal just by moving around your home. (I increased from 15% to 45% just by moving rooms.)

2 days after receiving my modem i am still unable to connect to register.

I keep getting the same [The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Centre for this error number.] message.

I drove down to Mal Park yesterday evening and got 30% signal strength on base station 36. Same error on my laptop.

I then drove to Broadway and got 20% signal strength on base station 36. Same error on my laptop.

I then drove over to 217 Umhlanga Rocks drive and got 37% signal strength on base station 60. Same error on my laptop.

From home I have a 17% - 20% signal strength to base station 36 and get the same error on my desktop.

My laptop runs XP home and the desktop runs XP Pro.
I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the software numerous times and still can't seem to get beyond the above message.

I've given up phoning the Sentech support desk as the responses range from 'your location is not covered'(a lady named Tessa last night) to 'we are esculating the problem to RF, can we have your contact details'(her supervisor last night). I don't know what this means and as I have not been contacted as yet, can only assume I've been told this so that they can get me off the line.

Is there anyone who has been down this road and possibly knows how to resolve the problem ?

I'm frustated beyond belief and am seriously considering sticking with my lowly analogue line and sending sentech their modem back.

It takes me 3/4 tries to connect to 36, but once it does, there is no problem from there... I dont know why this is?

Any ideas any1?
I feel the same way - Bellair/Hillary area cannot do ADSL - Cables to old (Applied for ADSL and was told this - another reaseon that I can only connect at 33.6k and keep getting dropped lines) and Telkom are not planning an upgrade in the near future.
I'll join your Toi-Toi !!

I'm in the same boat in Winston Park - ADSL not offered by Telskum and the best we get out of the Gillitts exchange is 28k (normally 24k). As far as I know nothing has been mentioned regarding Winston Park - maybe 3rd or 4th quarter ?? PROASM?

Hey :P I am also in Winston Park, lol coincidence. Just drop me an email and I'll let you know what ProAsm told me about the rollout up here, as I already picked his brain :)

My thanks to gbh who assisted me in getting to the root cause of the problems I've been having.

I connect using his modem from my location first time everytime.
He can't connect using my modem at all.

It seems that in their haste to get me connected the modem and my details weren't captured in sentech's 'authentication' database hence my battle to get connected. I've been assured things will be sorted out this morning.

Anyone experiencing similar difficulties check with support that you are indeed on their database. It would have saved a lot of time and effort if this had been done from the beginning and is perhaps something sentech should get their support staff to check first up.

Thanks gbh.

Not like an ordinary ISP, when you have so many to authenticate it is possible someone slips by - sorry about that.

ProAsm, now i'm confused. Are you sure the modem does not have to be "activated" ?

I tell you why ... I connected using my username + my modem
I could not connect using wizix modem + my username
wizix could not connect using his modem + his username
wizix did connect using my modem + his username

hense I / we concluded that his modem was the problem ... if not , then he's going to be one very unhappy chappy ...

Well my modem died on me today, so I went and got a brand new one, still sealed, slapped it on my PC, it first installed the drivers again, I then changed the username from new_user to me, logged on and away I went.

So no, the modem has nothing to do with it atm.
Maybe you are right in that the modems need activation - I'll check on that as maybe all these I had were activated before bringing them down.

wizix, gbh
There was a problem that noone had with his modem - the wrong bios version? Sounds to me that maybe the modem itself could be screwed or that the bios is wrong...maybe you guys should check out this post:

If you have already then apologies and good luck [:D]
