Has anyone tried MyWireless in Emmarentia (Jo'burg)? Cause I'm thinking of getting it but just wondering how the signal is here... and is it possible to rent a modem? Reeeeeeeeeally don't wanna spend a couple of k on a modem I'll only have for a few months :P

Dovi, why not use the zonelocator, at http://66.18.65.122/zonelocator/welcome.htm, to find your address; then once you have it plug the GPS data (in the bottom left hand corner) into the excellent Rational Distance Calculator, at http://rational.co.za/MyWireless/calculate.html, to see if you're within the (nominal) 5.7km range limit of a tower? Or you could follow the guide on the distance calc site and use Braby's Maps (but I prefer the zonelocator).

Going by gutfeel I suspect you may well be in range of the towers at Rosebank or the Sentech tower but you may find that all those (otherwise lovely!) trees may prove to be problematic; trees are known to be ...less than helpful with getting/maintaining a stable MyWi signal.

OR, yes- you can rent a modem, PM the user "Connection" (without quotes) for info on that.

lol thanx.. used the zonelocator, but the site doesn't look like it's been updated since 2004 so was just wondering if maybe there's better coverage now....

I may be wrong here but there has been VERY little done to add towers inside Guateng at the moment.

There are some indiciations that a new phase of tower roll-outs are on the cards but who knows.

So, to answer your question, I doubt the signal in that area would have changed from that indicated on the zonelocator....

To answer your question, I have a friend who uses Mywireless in Emmarentia (up near the Checkers), and he doesn't have any problems with his connection.

Jah thanx that's a major help, sicne I'm only like two blocks away from checkers :D:D We looking at the 128k but it says on the site that quality was... I think it was Fair.. or something along those lines so wasn't sure if it'd be worth it.. ah well... I'll give them a call some time soon depending on what happens in August :).... *sigh* Long wait...

TheRoDent I can see the HillBrow but there're trees in the way, and you know what that means *roll eyes* but I was looking on the online locator thignee, and it up by the Checkers are the quality is good, and by my house it's only partial which is odd considering there's only like a 400 metres (prob less) distance, and maybe a drop in height of 20cm

Honestly, if youre going to be staying there for more than say, 6 months or so, ADSL will be a better bet. Plus the modems are cheap. And you can cancel in a month. And it works. And it's fast. And and and and....

BTW, I live on the other side of Barry Hertzog of that Checkers. In Greenside. Literally two blocks in too.

lol TheRoDent... hope you're not in the house where Greenside High kids terrorise the dog there ;) Yeah I'm just up in Niger Rd, just off Judith (one up from Barry) so it's kinda odd.... We were looking at ADSL, but even tho it's unlikely that it'll happen to me, I'm worried about getting capped. I mean I generally might do a gig, gig and a half a month and that's just through all my chatting and browsing and updates etc. so I should be safe. But yeah we are looking at 192k DSL with TelkomSA as the ISP
