N3 Speed limit change

It's been a while since I actually drove the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban. It is frustrating to say the least. It seems as though the speed limits are systematically being reduced along large distances. I tend to follow the limit but these long distances with reduced speed limits are feeling a little crazy.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with these crazy changes along this route?

100 Km/h in long stretches along the section from Warden to Harrismith. Quite literally frustrating.

It's average speed over distance all the way so you have no choice but to stick to those limits.

I imagine the lowered speed limits that the government intend to introduce are actually being implemented in portions to avoid the public backlash.

I long for 100kmh limits. The highest it gets around here is 90...although just about everywhere is 80kmh. (Then again I wouldn't want SA taxis etc doing 100 around me on the ice here.)

I hear Sanral is planning another toll section in the N3 to bypass Van Reneens pass and they are claiming a 60 minute time saving. I'm guessing the time saving would be likely if they lowered the speed limit on the non-tolled section.

Van Reenen is already tolled, and the limit is 80 on the pass and 100 on the approaches, so I don't see them dropping it further. In fact, if they got the trucks using the new section, they could safely increase it to 100.

I wonder if they will close Van Reenen if they build a bypass...

the proposed bypass is receiving major opposition from Harrysmith as it would bypass that entire region and disrupt their economy which relies quite heavily from Passer-by's and speed camera prosecution...

Found something:

“The existing stretch of the R103/N3 past Harrismith and across Van Reenen’s Pass will remain in place and continue to be maintained by Sanral. Once the construction of the De Beers Expressway has been completed, there will be two highways crossing the Berg, providing all road users with an alternate route between Keeversfontein and Warden,” said Mona.

He adds that, while businesses on the current route would be affected, not all existing traffic would move to the new route.

Sanral expected one-third of the through-traffic to remain on the current route.

There is a 100km/h stretch from mooi river to almost pmb. It also has two sets of average speed trapping zones

Yes they recently changed the speed limit between Warden and Harrismith from 120 to 100. It is infuriating as it is a completely arbitrary limit reduction and the road can quite clearly support 120. It makes an already tedious drive even worse.

I cannot think of a good reason for this. It is a straight, easy road, so it isn't for safety. They changed it after the road works I believe which just resurfaced existing sections.

I don't think those ave speed cameras work because I have always exceeded the limit and not received any fines. I even see that some cameras have been vandalised and the wires ripped out. That said, I think the ones near Durban do work so don't take a chance there.

I've been hearing this for a very long time. I don't know when that will happen and I think rather than a new route they should rather beef up our rail system and get the trucks off the roads and then get all these drunken drivers removed allowing the others to enjoy comfortable responsible driving.

What about the speeders?

to be fair the N2 hardly feels like a dual carriage highway there

Wherever "here" is for you, I wish I was there. I like cold more than this ridiculous heat "here" where I am.
