Hiya!

I'm currently at University and can't afford wireless.

However, I hear the speeds when using 3G are quite good.

I don't know how to set it up on my phone. I have the N70, while my brother (who is also looking into this option) has the Nokia 6680.

Neither of our phones connect to the 3G network when we connect through PC Suite.

I have the following questions:
1. Do we need to buy a 3G card?

2. If not - what road must we walk down (Bob Dylan parody XD) to enable 3G?

We went onto the Vodacom website with the link given on this forum but it says the 'page is down or under service'.

Any help would be welcome! Thanks!

Maybe have ur sim 3G enabled?

Firstly make sure your phone is on Dual Mode and not GSM only, secondly, make sure you have 3G coverage in your area, without a 3G signal you're kinda screwed :p (although you should still be able to make use of EDGE)

I think you mean request [-]that[/-] [via 155] that the SIM card(s) be Data Enabled aka known as Provisioned for Data :).

@starflower, if you're able to browse the net from the actual phones, then your SIM card(s) should already be provisioned for data. Since you're on a student's budget, I think stick with trying to get the phones to work for Internet connectivity - data cards etc are somewhat pricey.

Thanks all!

It's quite sad, I spent two years convincing my folks to get uncapped ADSL - and now at University, when they do have it, I don't even benefit from it. :(

Um, OK, can 3G be used on a 32K card? I've got a vodacom prepaid (my lifeline) and a MTN contract (which I only use for free minutes >.< because they are SO unreasonably expensive!) which is a 3G card but there bundle's are SO expensive.

1 gig is R499 and on vodacom 2 gig is R389.

My question is do I need to buy a separate 3G SIM CARD to use 3G or will my 32K one suffice? XD

Thanks all!

I'm running a 32K sim card on a N70, and I definitely get 3G, both from the phone, and when used as a dial up option.

you could also try usnig the phone as a modem instead of using the PC Suite software, simply dial *99# using the Phone as the modem. This initiates a data connection on the phone.

I, too, have a Nokia N70.

Although I am within about 300m of the nearest tower AND my phone's display shows "3G", the best connect speed I am able to get is 460 kbps.

Download speeds are around 50 Kb/s.

Is this normal?

TIA :)

Well, if you mean 50 kB/s (kBytes) and not 50 kb/s (kbits) then it is better than normal! The max for 3G (no HSPDA) is 48kBytes/sec.

Sorry ... slip of the (freezing cold) finger! I meant 50KB/s and not 50kbps.

So, I am getting the maximum out of my cellphone? That's good to know!

Thanks for the reply, ajax!
