N95 8GB Firmware update

I got my hands on a N95 8GB from Vodacom, and as always it has been raped by the Vodacom firmware, I have the product codes to change it to, well, probably the Euro 1 code, thing is...

Will I lose my free 2 year Nokia Navigation? What about Spider Man 3? Anyone tried?

Vodacom firmware is on version 11, Nokia original, ver 15.
 
My steps

  1. Manually backup your phone files, use Sync to backup contacts & calendar. (Do not use the PC Suite Backup)
  2. Use NSS to change the product code to 0549487 (EURO1)
  3. Use Nokia Software Updater to upgrade to the latest firmware
  4. Use NSS to change the product code to original product code: 0558167 (Vodacom)

Following the steps above I lost my activation key for Spider Man 3*, but you do not lose the Navigation, if you change the product code back. It did prompt me to purchase, but then on selecting update list, it found the free navigation upgrade again.

* No biggie, re-encode it without DRM...
 
Excuse my ignorance, but why woudl you want to 'debrand' your phone? ...I'm interested IF I'm not going to lose my 2 year warranty and any data.

Will it make the phone perform better?

How do I know what firmware version I'm on?

You know by typing *#0000# into the phone.
Vodacom will always be behind with firmware.

Firmware updates (generally) make the phone perform better.

How do you re-encode?
 
Take your Spiderman 3 DVD, and run it through your favourite compression app. I use VirtualMod personally.

Nokia has a Movie converter tool I believe. That would probably be best. To me the firmware was more important than keeping a copy of a movie on my cell.
 
Spiderman 3 is getting deleted anyway......along with welcome videos and nonsense.
