Are any other n97 users struggling to find a gps lock? When i 1st got my phone it worked but took a long time, and ever since the firmware update it just wont find a gps lock no matter what.

I am in Cape Town and have gone to the flattest of flats with no buildings around and waited up to half an hour and Nothing. I hope it isnt a hardware multfunction as I have read that people have sent theirs back and received new ones. Hopefully there is a SA firmware update that can solve the gps issue :(

besides from this, this phone ROCKS!!!!!!

If you go into MENU; APPLICATIONS; LOCATION and then GPS DATA, press options and then positioning settings. In positioning method, make sure assisted GPS; Integrated GPS and Network based is checked. Go back and then into Positioning server. make sure it has an access point selected and the server address is: supl.nokia.com

Also when you go into GPS data and press options, go into Satellite status. Does it pick up any satelites?

Mine works perfectly and I did the firmware update....Hope it helps?
PS sometimes on my old nokia n95 I found that I had to restart the phone and then go into maps to be able to get a gps lock quicker...

thanks

I tried all of those before and it still doesnt :(
i read also that maps 3.0 was glitchy. will carry on doing some reading and fiddling around.

it could also be that I have a European handset is it was 1 from the batch of the N97 Search for N competition.

Yeah loving this phone!

On the GPS story. The first time I activated the GPS it took around 2 mins then after that it was between "instant" and 20 seconds.

I must say though that after the upgrade I seem to be hooking into less satelites. ie in Google maps I have recorded 9 satelite locks....but in recent times only 5 or 6.....it could just be the time of day etc, still...its very quick,

EDIT!: I take back what I said.........last night I was testing out the GPS with Trimble Geocache Navigator and I had a lock in just 5 seconds from the middle of my house (inside and under a tiled roof)! Waaaay better than my N95 (could never get a lock indoors anywhere).
Double checking on GPS Data.....7 satellites were locked....Indoors! Yip Im impressed!

Maybe there is something wrong with your handset then as i've been navigating everywhere i've gone since Thursday last week using GarminXT working like a dream

Leftfoot, getting satelite reception indoors (under a tiled roof) is not possible. It must be the terestrial assistance provided by the cell network that gave you a GPS lock.

I was watching the satelite status under GPS data. I clearly saw 7 satelites locked (blue lines) indoors and under a roof. Granted, 4 of those satelites were low and North on the map (direction of open window) so maybe that helped a bit. I doesnt happen every time but at least 30-40% of the time. Note: I do not have any "foil" heat and rain shield under my roof tiles. When Geocaching, I certainly get better reception under trees now.....not perfect, but better.
