Ok so this seems like an interesting field to get into but how does one go about studying it in this country?

I'm also interested in this field. Currently I'm studying electronic engineering (final year) - it gives you a base to build on. This is especially true if you focus on microelectronics/semiconductor physics which currently are starting to touch 'nano-issues'. Other fields of study I'd suggest are Physics or Material Science.

Either way - you'll only start directing your attention to nanotech on postgrad level. There isn't really alot of research going on in this field in SA but I think it will become huge internationally in the coming decades. Study it now and you'll be one of the rare experts when companies desperate need them.

What are you currently doing? If you're still at school - enjoy it - but ensure you leave with decent results. If you're unsure, go for engineering. It gives you a good base for many things and you might actually realise that this whole nano story is actually different to what you thought..

Feel free to PM me if you would like further advice

Nanotechnology will encounter many hurdles in the coming years that will require more and more technical knowledge. You will never be able to get into that industry as a designer or engineer with only 1 tertiary qualification.

Try something like a degree in physics and computer science and then after that go do an electr. engin. degree and then after that do a Masters in physics that starts to touch on nanotech. I'd suggest doing another Masters in engineering just for good measure because nanotechnology is really a multi-disciplinary science.

And remember if you do all the above at the university of Fort Hare ... it will still not help you.

Thanks for the info guys. Well i am still schooling - doing my matric but after that i do want to get into engineering. I was thinking electrical or electronic engineering. I do need to read up more on nanotechnology though. I would like to get into it since its fairly new, I just needed to know what to study. Few universities overseas are offering degrees on nanotechnology whereas here there are none so I just wanted to know my options.
