Over the last few days it has come to my attention that many people on the ADSL forum are very selfish and narrow minded.

WA released their prices and they have been lashed and stoned for their efforts. Axxess release their belated price list and again, nail that cross on and crucify the guys. SAOL come to the party and try to do what WA first did and make a plan for us, the consumer, for a great price on a higher cap and they have been branded with dodgy, untrustworthy and a deal too good I will rather miss it.

Telkom has release their new prices and we all know that those are wholesale ex VAT prices. What would be the point of these guys selling at a loss. They have to make money too and they are getting slated for it. Why?

Axxess have said they will built an IPC system and people are criticizing, WA says no special at the moment, people criticize, SAOL wants to self provide with an IPC system and people basicly tell them they are liars and idiots.

I honestly don't get this. People complain that Axxess don't take part in these forums, would you with the amount of abuse you would take from the forumites.

I think it is time you take a look at what you are doing and really ask if you are being constructive?

I agree.

I am so disappointed with the people on this forum. EVERYTIME a company or individual tries to help the community, they are stoned. Then they claim that they are just asking constructive questions.... I don't call insulting and accusing people/companies of underhanded activities as being constructive.

Why can't we for once just shut up and try and accept what these companies are trying to offer us. They are doing the best they can under the Telkom regime.

Give them a break!

I think people are upset and paranoid for a good reason - axxess were going on and on about how their prices werent going to change, and then they slam us with the most expensive package out there.

the saol deal looks fantastic - but how can they sell something for half of the price they're getting it at? If it sticks, I'm buying.

I dont see anyone going off at openweb because mrbeep is a friendly guy who kept people updated and the openbrowse package is kind of allright.

I think people are upset because they've been holding their breath waiting for these providers to come up with better prices and it didnt happen.

Give the disappointed consumer a break too.

Hi,

I'm not sure if I hold the same opinion about how people responded to the various price releases. I think that there are different types of responses. Some have, as you have rightly put it, reacted very badly and some even on the verge of personal attack in response. Others have reacted indifferently as this was expected. Other chose to see the best of the situation. I think that the point of this forum is to bring out diverse and honest opinion. As such I would be disappointed if everyone responds in exactly the same way or chose to hold back, because certain people feeling might be hurt. Diversity and honesty in responses are what make this process constructive. So to your last question, I say yes, anyone who responded, even those people who reacted negatively but honestly is contributed positively and constructively.

Also as human being, we often like to highlight the negatives. I think that this is true for both those people who responded to those ISPs post and those who looks through their posts afterwards.

Have a good day!!!

Nobody is going to be happy with the new prices, so we all complain.

All the ISPs promised that THEY have something special, and most of them come out with prices withing R10 of each other, others have promise of gloom or glory for the future.

Also, sadly enough, this is the ONLY public ofrum for these things.

If I phone Bob's ADSL and ask them why the price increase, and ask for some explanations, I will more then likely get no answer or a 'none of your business' type answer.

If I complain here, most ISPs do now want the 'wrath of MyADSL' so they will send someone here to answer in slightly more detail.

But I think it's human nature to complain in an environment where most of the people will agree with your point of view and complain with you.

Also I think a lot of people have been dissapointed, thinking that some of the ISP's would manage to keep prices the way it was. Unfortunately (and from what I can gather ICASA seems to be missing this point) the ISP's are the guys who have to take the brunt of flaming because they are the guys taking the money from the consumer. Telkom is sitting safely behind their resellers and carry on ripping us a new. This time however they have managed to deflect the attention to the ISP's and take the focus off themselves, although Telscum is still to blame for the high ADSL pricing, adn NOT the ISP's.

The problem I have with a large number of the responses is they appear to be coming from competitors or employees of comeptitors. There are a large number of posts on these forums that appear to be posted by the same person or group of people (ie. members posting with low post counts all praising/aking questions about certain ISPs... surely questions directed at members that are owners of ISPs should be done via private message or to the actual ISP itself).

This is a marketing tactic that has been used in all sorts of forums and I think the moderators should have a look into this.

The main company I have a problem with is Axxess. They have blatantly lied to a lot of people on this forum!

It would be one thing if they said to us "The prices are going to go up, but we're hoping to get the best deal for you guys."

But they didn't.

They stated adamantly that their prices would NOT change and that it would be business as usual. Even if they thought their infrastructure would be in place in time, their "cheap" rates are still 3 times more expensive than what their current rates are!

I just think it's really bad form!

I still haven't heard a thing from allyoucaneat!

This is true.

You will find that most of the out lashing to ISP's are from other ISP's or employees of them. Competition is good but some don't like it and they feel that if they "expose" the other ISP's it will make them look a bit better.

So for some this forum has become a battlefield for ISP's, when it should be a place to consolidate. If all ISP's worked together everybody could benefit, we could regulate the pricing of ADSL just by pooling our numbers thus affording more bandwidth to supply our clients.

After all, the cell companies have been doing it for years.

In response to Kilkenny, I can't agree there with you. Think about it. I f you have your mind set on doing something, you tell everyone that youi are going to do this thing. If it doesn't work out in the end, are you a liar????
If you guys step back and look at the bigger picture, don't you think if the ISP's could bring down the price, they would? Think about it, if I was an ISP I would come in with the lowest price possible in a situation like this, especially after checking out this forum and seeing what the public want and need. I would make a killing that way!!
SO I would say to all the ISP's out there, thanx guys, I know you tried, Telkom just sux and they have us all by the balls!!!!!

Sorry but that would provide as much competition as say OPEC and I dont think collusion in any form is a good thing for anyone other than the businesses.

Still - I'm glad to see you have the lowest prices, by a considerable amount - that in itself should be enough to spur the other ISPs into action - a dwindling client base has that effect.

That recent article on the profit margins of SA companies makes me wonder what percentage the ISPs tack on.

I can not remember the exact figure but it was published here. Lets call it R65 per gig. This figure was shown on the myADSL forum near on 2 months back. If one does the maths 10gig = R650 and 30gig = R1950.

These prices are not a suprise, if they are you have just not been aware of what has been taking place. Taking into account these prices are whole sale and have no bells and whistles attached by the isp, neither does it have there cut stiched on.

WA has tried to forumlate a plan and went the legal route, Axxess has tried to lay down infrastucture and SAOL seems to be following. Others have changed backbone providers.

All these plans have been to try and counter a very negative move on Telkoms behalf. Also unfortunate is the fact that none have been ultimately successfull in your sense of the word. Times may get better they may get worse but it is of no choice of the ISP's and it is not like they have been twiddling their thumbs intentionally deciving people.

@Jack Goa. Yes, if I knew that would never be a reality, that would make me a liar.

I'm not saying that the ISPs have not been trying, I'm sure they have. What I have a problem with is stating that a service will remain the same when the reality is that even their future, ideal pricing is still 3 times more expensive.

I am certainly not saying that the ISPs have brought this upon us. Of course it is Telkom and their even worse practices.

I think that WA did things the way they should have been done. Tell the community that they are working on a solution to the problem, but the chances are the prices are going up. That way customers know what's happening. There is no deceit and no bad blood when the truth is revealed.

@James - The problem with generalisations is that you completely ignore a lot of peeps.
But - yer point are true, like any community, we're quick to grumble, extremely slow to compliment.
We also tend to forget to point the fingers where they should be pointed - i.e. Governmint and our useless minster of looks like herself.

@James. No the prices are not a surprise. In the same way that the prices were not a surprise to the ISPs. They had the same information as we did, and the added bonus of the notification from Telkom. I'm not sure how this justifies telling your clients pricing will stay the same when they, and we know the pricing will change.

Kilkenny, I think the case was that Axxess firmly believed they were going to be able to give good prices, but in the end it did not work out. I was phoning them on a regular basis and they were kept as much in the dark as we were. They were still negotiating on Friday as far as my knowledge goes.
Ok now I'm gonna stop before I get accused of working for them...
;) Just supporting my ISP is all..

Hahahaha. I have no doubt that you don't work for them. This is just a good old fashioned debate :)

The problem I have, and the one I keep going back to, is that they were telling their clients that their new infrastructure would mean that their pricing was not going to change. They said that up until the last second. I can't see how their envisioned prices can go from 350 to 900 in the matter of a day.

Sure they could still have been negotiating till the last, but they would still have an idea of their costs long before they let us know the facts.

Very True.... generalisation fixed

A thought!

There is a problem with this forum, that seems to be getting bigger by the amount of numbers of new users.

It all started with that Celemaisko issue if some of you can still remember. He is rare nowadays and hardly posts here or he has a new nick.

The whole problem there was also only perceived. Many people are here giving their 2 cents worth free of charge, and the running of this site is voluntary bordering on charity.

So these ISPs are keeping us informed for our own good. If we carry on this way they disappear and we'll be arguing amongst ourselves again.

The blame for this whole thing rests on telkom. I think that we should side and sympathise with these ISPs because these people have got bonds and stuff and they are trying to keep themselves solvent.

Rather than attack them, use that energy to chose the best one and go.

The more people flam and get personal here the more its going to spiral out of control

Please just keep it relevant, objective and semi-professional or if that fails, at least try and be sarcastic.
