If you think about it a reputable ISP must have support staff, preferably with after hours support too. They must have a physical adress, ie. an office and telephone and office facilities, electricty, water and the usual costs. We know how much the bandwidth costs so on ADSL alone an ISP would struggle in a big way.
Just on that note.
What do you people want from your ISP? Support? What for - if SAIX upstream dies its SAIX's fault not theirs, they can't do anything about it.
Ok, so we don't need support - we connect and there we go. So scratch that off the list.
Email? Well, I wouldn't really use my ISP's email service - but that's just because I have the resources to self provide it. Ok so some people might need a good email box, that doesn't take much.
WWW space? Well, unless they are going to offer a VirtualHost line to something other than fooname.isp.co.za, not many people are interested there...
SMTP? They all CNAME that to smtp.saix.net/mail.is.co.za anyway... so scratch that off.
*shrug* you tell me, so long as you can connect to the internet, what difference does it make if you are paying R199 or R220. I'd think it wasn't worth the hassel to switch ISP's over that.
Do you want them to come and make noise on MyADSL? Well, I don't really care about that, although it is nice. For the big players (Datapro, UUnet, Mweb, IS, SAIX [ AHHAHAHAHAHA yea... worth the laugh]) its highly usefull, but I honestly don't quite care what Axxess, WebAfrica or JoeBlogsISP or whoever say. Their service provision doesn't exactly require massive IT genius or savy knowledge of the networks, they are just businessmen trying to corner the market in whatever way. Infact, I'd be more happy if they stopped spamming the forums with attacks on their competition - competition is one thing, but every single day there is some annoying "OMG we are R1 cheaper than XXX isp, sign up now!". But worst of all, everyone jumps on the band waggon.
But of course, I'm probably just wasting my breath.
