I've got 4 x 2TB harddivers and thought I'd buy a NAS for them. I had no idea they were so expensive, with processors, RAM and many come with backup and business type features, redundancy etc

Anyone recommend a SIMPLE NAS that just holds 4 drives?
Or am I really looking at R3,000-R4,000 to hold my drives?

I'm going to connect it to a gigabit switch and both my PCs will be in the same switch to access.

HP Microserver + Unraid.

Yes about R3 - 4k.

A purpose built NAS device is a whole lot more.

I wanted something smaller than my HP :/ But I guess I could use it.

Why is a purpose build one more expensive?
Does it do anything different?

Sadly NAS is new to the home user in RSA and you wont be able to find a drive enclosure less than 3k.
