NAS?

The new Western Digital NAS devices come with Windows Home Server preloaded and they support teaming both network ports together for a 2Gbps link back to your network.

Otherwise the Netgear NAS devices aren't too bad either.

@OP Where are you located?

Currently in PE. But help me God I will be back in JHB end of next year.

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread. I'm also after a NAS for home, but minimum is a 4 HDD NAS.
I have a 2 HDD D-Link NAS at my office which works pretty well, so the 4 HDD from D-Link is a logical choice for me.
The mention of the HP microsever has intrigued me though. I know nothing about it.

This one here:
http://www.hpshop.co.za/p-8732-hp-proliant-g7-n54l-microserver-704941-421.aspx

It states, "Integrated 4 port SATA RAID"
Does that mean it can take 4 HDD's?
Would this device operate in the same way as the D-Link type NAS?

Thanks

Just on that note, I can get those same models for R2199.00, I will place an order if I get enough interest.

Seems I will be forced to go the microserver route. But I do however need loads of help, I am running off a macbook pro currently so how will I be able to setup the microserver? Do I not need a computer screen for the initial setup? What operating systems are you guys running on your systems?

These are just a few of the many questions I have... Have to go to bed now, got a semester test tomorrow evening.

I would make use of this thread, you're more likely to get your answers.

4 drives internally, then you can squeeze another in the optical bay if you don't need an optical drive.

You can also run another drive from the ESATA port (my boxes use 5x 3.5" hdd's and 1x 2.5" hdd).

You can fit even more if you spam 2.5" drives - its a great box. I suggest you stop listening to people who tell you otherwise and instead go for an informed opinion. I've got 2 in use at home and 2 in use at work as VM file storage on ZFS filesystems.

I've also done about 5 installations for friends / other companies, for the money you CANNOT beat this device.

Sweet!

This thing is a beaut!

I'm using the 3.5'" + 2.5" combo dock for the optical bay.

So I have 4x 2TB 3.5" in normal bays and 1x 2TB 3.5" in optical bay, along with the 2.5" drive. However you need to run ESATA from outside the chassis, to back in the chassis for the 6th drive... (or get an additional RAID card)

Very true. At this price these things are the best ever.

I am running unraid on it.

Got the Microserver 54L. Loving it. Now for some saving and getting more drives in there.

Running ubuntu and xbmc. Sourcing a wifi router so i can use it for some of my web projects I have been doing over the years. Thing is nice!

Thanks guys for the great advice!
