NASA wants more astronauts

So was this the big announcement for today?
I thought it had to do with the Mars atmosphere?

They surely can't have a lack of applicants.

“From pilots and engineers, to scientists and medical doctors, NASA selects qualified astronaut candidates from a diverse pool of U.S. citizens with a wide variety of backgrounds.”

They can't accept any old duffers.

That neurosurgeon thinks the pyramids were used to store grain so I am not sure what's going to be so special about the bunch you mentioned.

I didn't say they'd pick any of those within those parameters who applied. They're vetted then selected.

IIRC, NASA plans on manned missions to Mars (or just its orbit) by 2030, so there's still time to recruit and train astronauts. Any idea how long the current training takes?

Got to wonder as well whether (or how often) NASAs competitors are poaching their recruits/seasoned staff.
