Damn, I just phoned them to ask for a quote on a cheque account:

R 85.00 a month flat service fee

Free internet/telephone banking
Free debit orders
Free unlimmited swipes with the card. (I always swipe the debit card I never withdraw cash.)
4x Free ATM withdraws
Free Dedit Garrage card (No fee's) linked to your account - No debit like a credit card with no interrest as it's from you account directly.

I just signed up :p

Fk Standard bank and their usless services, useless customer service and high rates

I signed up with Standard Bank on the 7 February ... ran into my first issue on the 9 February. I'm wishing I'd left them alone tbh.

I also forgot,

They are giving me R 750 for signing up :D

Yea I have been a long standing client with STDbank for over 10 years. I'm a loyal person but I figured it's time to give them the boot. Enough is enough.

I was thinking about going to FNB, but their branches are always so crap busy. That is the reason I took Nedbank instead ;) They never have any massive queues at the branches for some reason.

You pay R65 at FNB - and everything electronic is free, unlimited withdrawals (from FNB ATMs)...

EDIT: Someone beat me to it.

I actually get much the same deal with Standard Bank - not the R750 for signing up, admittedly :D But I get something like 30 free transactions (debit orders, electronic account payments) and a fair number of withdrawals, and free internet banking. No free debit card transactions, which is a pity, but I pay around R87 per month. That's on the Classic Cheque Account.

I was thinking about switching to Nedbank, but since all the transactions I ever need to do fall within my limit, it's not really worth the hassle of switching debit orders around.

R19 per month difference. Considering time is money, seems like a good move to me.

The debit garrage card is what got me tbh. Currently I'm paying a fotune on the Garrage card linked to my STDbank credit card.

I love the Debit garrage card idea.

I think I'll sign up with Nedbank, well I have a Nedbank Mzansi account which I almost never use and so I am thinking of chaning it to a cheque account. I like the fact that Nedbank queues are not long compared to other banks, and I like their "green" messages with their adverts :D. I'm currently with ABSA, I pay R95 a month for a cheque account, that's R95 with 10 transactions or less a month.

I honestly wonder why that is.

I hardly ever need to go into the banks but when I do it takes up the whole bloody Saturday. Last time I went in to STDbank (There is a Nedbank next to it) I was at STD bank for 4 hours, 3 of them waiting to see a consultant. And nedbank from what I could see had about 15 people in there

I'm paying R185.00pm for the 'free' transactions and a few extra benefits. I justified the added expense by the benefits listed here :

http://www.standardbank.co.za/SBIC/Frontdoor_02_02/0,2454,9489051_9489138_0,00.html

Bank by fax transactions
Annual MasterCard Credit card, Garage card linked to current account and Diners Club fees (excluding loyalty programme fees and subject to minimum spend)
Garage card transactions, if linked to your current account
Discounted service fees on the secondary or spouse Prestige account
Monthly home loan administration fee
Establishment fees for guarantees
Will safe custody

Bank cheques
Sales and repurchase of travellers cheques from us for personal use
Inward foreign currency telegraphic transfers
Foreign currency drafts issued for travel purposes
Electronic balance enquiries
Electronic mini-statements
Electronic provisional statements
Non-carbonised chequebooks
Stop payments
Closed safe custody

They now tell me they don't offer the highlighted benefits (even though they advertise it) which upsets me slightly :/ I have to pay extra for them.

Oh - and what also annoyed me is that I told Standard Bank I wanted to consolidate everything, closed off my other 4 credit cards (owe nothing) but have a single credit card with a limit of 50% of the 4 others that I'll be using.

They gave me R13,000 limit :/

The problem with Nedbank is that there are very little ATM's :(

I honestly never withdraw cash.

Everything I do is either via EFT or by debit card. This habit i got gong since Varsity as getting drunk and losing a wallet with a few R 100 bucks in it is a massive loss when your are just a student. Losing a card is no problem :p

I do carry about R 300 on me just in case but tbh I think the R 200 odd rand still left in my wallet has been there for over 3 months already.

Interesting... I was thinking of approaching to Nedbank to see if they'd better my rates too... Now I should.

@Staalbal/Pitbull/soon to be known as the poster formerly known as... :)p): SB can link the Garage Card to your cheque account instead, which has no additional charges.

I honestly wish they told me that. They had my garrage card linked to my Credit card. So I would put in fuel or service my bakkie and then they charged interrest on it. I used it because it was easier for me, but the charges started adding up and I didn't like it.

Glad to know, but it's too late now :D

I guess. But I almost never go into branches, I don't do queues or ignorant bank employess. Id rather do everything electronically.

Oh just check your Nedbank accounts transaction charge details, branch transactions are generally not included in unlimited transaction options.
