ok - so i see there are many articles about certain quadcore intel cpuz getting to 4.0ghz with air cooling.

a) which cpu(s) exactly can/gets this done
b) what mainboard (exact model) can you recommend (good availability a must)
c) ram capable with this overclock - need 2-4gigs
d) psu requirements

thx

a) I think you'd want one of the new Peryn 45nm CPUs
b) Don't know, don't own a 45nm CPU :(
c) Most RAM should be fine (if you overclock in Unlinked mode that is :D)
d) The more the merrier I'd say :D

soz seen the same question in to many different forums, one of those days :)

silly point but you have read articles on it so why not just take note of what they used, 45nm is new in SA so not to many have one so how can we answer without having to look up the same articles you say you have read :p

Only one i can see in SA at the moment is the QX9650, towards the end of Jan there are supposed to be more released but no one knows for certain if they will be as Intel is talking about holding back a few of them.

to give you an idea and be helpful, no point posting if you post rubbish the whole time like google it

I think he wants to do it with air cooling...

ummm according to him he has read things so why the heck does he need others to re-read for him and then give him answers he should have seen when he read the articles in the first place ???

He said on air and no 65nm do it on air so it has to be about 45nm

p.s. i always google before asking questions so i do not waste peoples time all the time :)

as carderne pointed out - i just wanted a general idea of whats the local opinion...not google's (and the 1000's of websites)

SO you want others to do the work because you are to lazy, makes sense :p

so 45nm can do it on air?

why search through google when you can get ppl FORUMS to help

lucky you dont run forums 6700 or no one would ever speak :)

I have to ask this man, what exactly are you planning to achieve by ocing a quad to 4ghz? Especially if you have no idea on how to achieve this? I mean, even if you do pull it off, on aircooling, you still have to closely monitor your system and that requires some experience.

I say you post your needs and we try and find a solution...

thx killa and those for the constructive posting.

personally it is not for me since i'm not worried about getting such nice hardware yet - its on behalf of a friend who does video editing in Adobe Afterefects/Premier pro (music videos for customers)...(maybe i should have included this in the original post)

he is currently on a 820d core duo p4 cpu - 3ghz - and i recommended the qq6600 since that be optimal given fsb limitations of current mainboard.

so either it is that for him - or getting this NEW hardware - and overclocking it - why AIRCOOLING - because he has got a massive aircon unit in his room - which is ALWAYS 16'c - havent had any water issues forming on chassis ect.

hardware he has got: 2x 150Raptors in stripe set , 4gb ram , 8800ultra - but he wants more oemf....

so its either another machine and physically devide the work - or build fastest and overclock.

why did i ask the local crowd? - because this is not my field of interest - yeah shortcuts taken maybe - but shees - don't call me lazy - the forums are here - people are friendly - and at least i didn't ask what a news server is or what is a cap - haah....

anyhow!
thx

I'm running a Core 2 Duo e6300 1.86Ghz overclocked to 3.22Ghz. Only cooling I've got is some 120mm fans in my case and a Zalman CPU cooler. Barely runs hotter than35 degrees whilst I'm playing Crysis.

Unfortunately I haven't had much experience with quad cores, but I would imagine most high range 45nm chips would be able to pull it off. Just make sure you have a board that can handle it and RAM that won't expload (OCZ comes to mind).

Iv'e got an old Celeron 2.6 running at 4Ghz on my media centre. with a Q6600 stock cooler

still slow though. I think it can go further, but the board I've got only supports 800FSB, so I cant try for more.

The QC CPU everyone is overclocking so happyly to 4Ghz is the QX9650

You don't acually need a top overclocking board to overclock it as it has a unlocked multiplier. Well not everyone can spend R10K on a CPU. In Feb I think there will be a Q9450 running at 2.66Ghz. For that one you will need a good board. I think the best is the ASUS P5E based boards or other X38 chipsets.
