Are you able to receive or make calls on your phone while the data connection is active on your phone? Many years ago when I got my first 3G phone I used it as a modem, and I could never receive calls etc while the data connection was running.
Most phones should allow this. If I'm not mistaken, the 3G specification either allows for this, or enforces it. 3G data and voice use seperate radios on your phone, as they are using different radio spectrum/frequency. But not with GPRS and EDGE. They use the same spectrum as 2G/voice. So receiving a phone call will pause your connection.
