As per the title, I want a good ereader, but not sure which is the best to get.
I looked at the kobo, but found it to be very small.
any suggestions on an ereader with a bigger screen, yet still good functionality and light??

So far a google search seems to suggest the ipad mini, but I would prefer one that is using e-ink, and not an iproduct

What do you want a big screen for, if you don't mind me asking?

I will be reading a fair amount of articles/papers and I do not want to be scrolling all the time. Also, prefer to have the font at a size that does not require any squinting to be readable :)

If your articles/papers are pdf, you're better off with a tablet.

Price range?

The reason I'm asking is that if you can go tablet instead of eReader you should (unless you really really REALLY only ever want it for reading books).

price range .. hmmm ... as low as possible :)
maybe something in the R2k range?? but really ... just want something that will be decent and light.

only really really really want it for reading :) ... not a real fan of tablets as my phone covers that function and then my PC ... just really need something light and functional for reading only

Really hard to look past the iPad's 4:3 form factor if all you want to do is read articles / books / pdf's.

The Mini is absolutely perfect for your needs but unfortunately quite a bit beyond your budget. The screen resolution of the Mini is another issue but if you're not used to better it is more than adequate.

Maybe an iPad 2 would be closer to your budget but PPI is even worse than Mini and of course it is much bulkier.

Freaking decisions decisions .... good luck!

I got the low end Kindle and can report that PDF magazine/textbooks are a pain. It's perfect for books though and the text is resizeable on the fly. A great device but perhaps not what you're looking for...

is the ipad mini an e-ink device??
cause I am only interested in something with e-ink as I really do not want to bother with charging it all time

at this rate it looks like I am going to killing more trees :(

In that case I suppose getting an eReader is better. No need to fork out the extra $$$ for something you won't use.

It needs to be pointed out that there is only one actual e-reader (= with an e-ink screen) which has a larger screen than the standard 6", and that's the Kindle DX, which I think is no longer available and was in any case prohibitively expensive.

If the larger screen is the deal-breaker then you need to go for a 7" or 10" tablet, but bear in mind if it is mainly for reading, that you then forfeit the specific advantages of the e-ink screen: more restful on the eyes because not backlit, easier to read than a tablet in bright (sun)light, exceptional battery life between recharges.

There are really only 2 options that I can think of, disregarding the iPad Mini (which I feel to be a very strong option):
1) Nexus 7 is cheap and very high quality
2) Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-ink reader on the market.

To my knowledge pretty much all the dedicated e-readers use variations of the same 6-inch e-ink screen. You'll not find anything with a bigger screen than a Kobo/Nook/Kindle/whathaveyou because they all use the same hardware.

You'll either need to get used to the screen, or more likely, need to settle for an LCD tablet instead. Expect eye strain and don't expect 6 week battery life.

You can read my previous posts on other threads about the Kobo vs Kindle*, go Kobo, R1K at Pick n Pay and then use Calibre to manage your content.

Personally going to get a Kobo now for myself for my UNISA content that I need to read, my eyes strain too much on my Samsung 7" tablet.

* My wife has a Kindle and my daughter a Kobo

Kindle DX being the exception at 9.7".

Afaik the Kindle Paperwhite does not use the same panels as previous generation e-readers. It's higher contrast and higher resolution. The last gen Kindle was the Pearl screen which is pretty much default across readers.

so far seems like the kindle DX is the only real option .... but its been discontinued .... will still keep looking
or failing that .. will have to settle for a kobo

What's wrong with the Paperwhite? Or failing that the latest Nook backlit one?
