nothing ... but damn you for increasing my choices and putting me back at step 1 :(

the only thing I can see so far is that the kobo is cheaper and readily available locally ... also I think the kobo has a memory card slot and unlike the kindle , you can load 3rd party titles

that being said .... I just want a e-ink reader around 8-9" ... so while I may settle for 6"(because I have no other option) ... both those options would work and I would probably lean more towards the nook .... as I do not like the fact that amazon do not "allow" 3rd party titles
 
Articles, papers and pdfs on 6" e-reader = white elephant gathering dust after a week. :)

thats what I'm afraid of .. surely there must be enough demand fro this type of device??
8-9" seems like a reasonable size .... not too big ... and not too small!!
 
jip and the free shipping, i was considering one, I am not a big reader, but there is the odd thing here and there i wanna read.
 
with the kobo you can get up to 1 month on a single charge ... now that is impressive ...

Apparently not, otherwise Amazon would still be selling the Kindle DX. Your best bet, get a cheap second hand ipad 2 or something on Gumtree. Charge it overnight, so battery life won't ever be an issue.

It does not use e-ink, resolution is very low compared to e-ink readers. Its great for somebody that wants to watch videos, listen to MP3s and read for short periods of time.

Cons:
* "Antiglare" is non-existant when compared to e-ink
* No Wifi
* Buttons are not easy to use
* Low resolution
* Cheap panel

Ok how about a Kindle Fire 8.9'? That's fHD and the perfect size. To be honest, reading on a good quality LCD/IPS panel is about the same as reading on an e-ink screen. Battery life is inferior but so what? Charge it in the evening and it will last a day or two at least. And it's hugely more versatile than e-ink readers. Being able to get proper PDF support (by scaling text properly) alone makes it better as a reader in many aspects than e-ink versions. That's why I'd still recommend the iPad Mini or Nexus7 first, anything else second.
 
The battery issue is a biggie for me .... I never remember to charge stuff and adding another device that needs to be charged, means I will probably end up not using it after a week or so
so e-ink is a definite must .....

What do you mean 3rd party titles? You can put any supported format files on the Kindle, and convert anything that isn't with Calibre. You also aren't 'locked in' to Amazon's store. You plug it in, shows up like a flash drive, copy whatever you want into the documents folder and ta-da!

I understand that you want the extended battery life. It's one of the huge reasons I love my Kindle, but trust me, pdf's are horrid on it. It's going to be a frustrating experience more than anything else. It doesn't do the formatting or scaling properly, and you can't navigate easily either. 6" e-ink eReaders are fantastic for books, not much else. If you're going to be reading pdf's, articles, journals or whatever, then you're really better off with an iPad Mini/Kindle Fire/Nexus 7.

3rd party = epub ... from what I have read ... not that I use it or even know what it is :)
but I just dont like the idea of being locked out of something on a device that I paid for

I definitely will be using it more for pdf, journals and articles ... will have to go and try one of these e-ink readers out, so I can see if it is something I can actually use ... pick n pay hypermarket did not have any kobo readers on display the last time i went .. will have to go again or find another store

Epub is a format used by some of the other readers. How are you locked out? By not being able to use epub on the Kindle? Well, no device supports all formats. It takes like 5 seconds to convert epub to mobi with Calibre, though, which the Kindle reads just fine.

Try DionWired or Incredible Connection, they usually have some Kindles on display so you can play with them a bit. I can just tell you from my own experience that there's no way in hell that I'm ever using my Kindle to read pdf's again. It was just plain unpleasant.
 
I do find the e-ink alot easier on the eyes than that of an Ipad, I always found my eyes taking strain for long periods of time on an ipad, or maybe I am just making things up and its just in my head.
