Hi ppl

I am thinking of getting a nanny to look after my 3 month old baby and to clean the place. do you prefer someone staying with you 5 dyas a week or just come everyday.

My wife is going back to work soon so i need to make decisions.

How much do you have to pay them?
How do you know they not going to clean your place when you coming home 1 day.

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Get French one. Aged 21. Have her wear a french maid outfit. Have her stay with you, preferably with you in your bed.

Our nanny comes in each day and its better. We pay her R3K per month and she has to cover all her own expenses (transport, etc). Just keep in mind that the nanny is there to look after the little one first and everything else is secondary.

If want a clean house, then get a maid instead ;)

Even thought the nanny is pricey, its worth every cent as the kids (now 2) get raised at home and not away from it. Also they get less sick and that means less doc bills - also dont fall for the story of creches expose kids to germs and builds up their immune system as you will end up with a little one more at home than at creche.

i thougt they cost R1500 nowadays?
thats the thing. i don't want our 3 month old in the cold winter every morning. better if they are indoors until they old enough for creche.

We pay ours R1100 for 3.5 hours a day so she is there when my son comes home every afternoon. We also provide lunch and supper before she leaves. And a cellphone + monthly airtime. She does minimal housework - basically just tidying up toys, washing the dishes they've used and making beds.

StevieG - I think that the minimum for a full day is around R1700( don't quote me on this)

We went to an Nanny/Maid Agency and they provided trained candidates and references and criminal checks. There was a once off placement fee to the agency and we pay her monthly, R2000. She also stays in and we provide food and and toiletries. And also does house work, not everyhting everyday but the basic stuff gets done, washing and ironing.

Is Nanny/Maid Agency only in Joburg.

The problem is if you take someone that comes everyday then you have to pay them more then people who stays with you.
I would prefer someone who stays with us. My budget allows for R1000-R1800.

Any grandparents around to assist ?

We pay ours R4k, 5 days a week, 7:30 to 4pm.

(Trained, has a Teaching Degree, ran her own Creche')

It's expensive, but its your kid.

They stay about 25min drive away. reason not going that route is because i don;t want to move the baby in the cold mornings and late afternoons. traffic is the other factor which will make me late when i still have to drop my wife off at work.

let 'em move in with you :)

build a grannyflat.

Grandparents tend to love them grankids more than their own.....

That's peanuts for a permanent nanny.
You're going to end up paying for their living costs anyway unless you plan to keep the nanny in a garden shed with no water or electricity.
When you're paying for the water and lights they don't have a concept of using it sparingly - the boss is paying so who cares.

It's not cheap dude, but you want someone who is not just going to make sure your kid doesnt eat the Toilet Duck, but one that actually stimulates your child. Nanny's that have training (similar to the basics of Occupational Therapy), massage, routines and nap times, how and when to feed, first aid, can read and write (well) and can have a conversation about what your child did /didnt do during the day is worth whatever you think its worth.

We pay ours a lot, but I know she is worth it. You need to decide what you want out of it vs what you can pay.

Good luck!

Did you know that their basic salary is R1200. i am not taking the person on permanently. child must be at least 2-3 years old before she goes to creche/pre school.
Im looking on gumtree atm. they say the zimbabweans are the best. must be in the age gap of 30-40.

Careful now, lots of horror stories on mybb re nannies.....

Keep in mind she needs to have a valid work permit and its up to you to ensure she does, you also need to have her registered for tax (legal requirement for even a garden gnome) and you have to pay UIF. I know FNB offers a free payroll online service to its clients else your going to pay R50-R100 per month for an accounting firm to manage it.

Also you get what you pay for and the less you pay in cash, the more she is going to cost in other things (food, petrol, phone, electricity, etc). As mentioned we pay ours a lot and except for lunch which she has to make herself, she gets not a cent more from us.

Damn do people still get paid that low? I guess its that or no job for them, not that I could afford one either though. Bleak for them.

My GF(23) is an Au pair and earns closer to R10k, she has to use her own vehicle though.

hope you're going to be home all day to supervise, otherwise i wouldn't take a chance on anyone - not even for R10k per month. young children can't tell you what's been happening during the day. i came home unexpectedly one day to find my 8 month old grandchild howling his eyes out and the "nanny" sitting next to him staring out of the window.
