So I currently drive a 2011 BMW 320D (took delivery on 3 Jan 2011).

I absolutely love the car.

However, I work in Sandton and live in Randburg. I take my bike to work in the mornings and I spend a grand total of 30 minutes a day traveling to work and back.

I'm currently spending a LOT on a car that I only use for shopping - or when weather is really bad.

Any advise on a much cheaper, reliable, and not total deathtrap?/

Thanks :D

So if you were to sell it, how much would you be looking for? :p

If the car is on HP just make sure you can sell it for more than what you owe the bank, if you are only two years in and didnt put down a huge deposit it might be worthwhile hanging on to the BM for a bit longer. You don't want the downgrade to cost you more than your BMW.

That aside, what kind of car are you looking for? Sedan? Hatch? How much power? Budget?

I can get about 40k more for the car than I owe on it atm.

I was thinking of a hatchback, like a polo, golf, want to spend R150 - R200k (the cheaper the better, as I will rarely use the car)

If you love it so much why don't you drive it to work?

Oh and Honda Ballade.

2010 Ford Focus 2.0 A/T, Eagle ford has them for a steal.

I am in the same situation as you. Have a bike and love it. I just don't have a car as I refuse to pay for something that will sit collecting dust for 6 out of 7 days a week. Do you really even need a car at all? Just use your wife/partner's (if they exist) on the weekend when you need to and invest the savings. Else get R50000 second hand car and invest the rest.

Alas I am single. And I will sometimes want to use the car. I really am thinking a very cheap but capable car is the answer.

I am in exactly the same situation except it's a 2010 320d :P Love the car to bits but I can't decide if I want to sell it keep or the km's low and drive the car for a looong time.

I was looking at the Hyundai Accent, R140k with motorplan etc and a 150k warranty.

Tough decision tho

If you want to go with a super-mine then the i10 1.25 will be perfect. It has enough safety kit to keep you safe, enough power to keep you moving and a pretty good ABS+EDB setup to stop you in time.

Should you want something slightly larger then the [-]Deawoo[/-] Chevrolet Sonic is the most affordable and good looking B-segment car you can buy, and like the i10 its a Korean car so it should be good.

Lastly if you want something that more or less resembles the sedan vibe you currently have then the Honda Ballade is an excellent choice.
