My old MS Wireless 5000 is packing up and i'm looking for a replacement.
I'm not crazy about the way the MS mice handle in os x, and i really don't like the apple mice.. I like a large ergonomic mouse that I can rest my hand on. Any suggestions?

get a ( magic trackpad ) and chuck the mouse. let your fingers do the walking. its multitouch and once you use it, you realise the only thing that made trackpads silly thus far, is that they where mounted in the middle of your laptop and not right underneath your hand to the side of your desk.

I have a Wacom Graphire tablet that came with both a pen and a cordless mouse. I bought it to experiment with the pen, but now you will have to take the mouse out of my cold, dead hands.

Great thanks,

@bleh69 can you do very accurate movements with the trackpad? I'd like to try it, but there's a bluetooth problem with the 2009 mac pro - I had to return the magic mouse because of that.

@voicy do the Razers play nice with osx?

@clasqm which model wacom?

Any USB mouse works. Razer make very nice mice. There are some great mice by Logitech too.
The Graphire.

oops, missed the graphire bit :p

i know any usb mouse works, but some seem to have better configurability/drivers than others, i've heard logitech has good drivers and i know microsoft has intellipoint for osx - it's nice to have the extras.

Does anyone know where (in Joburg) i can actually see and handle some of these mice? I've been to a couple of the mainstream shops but they don't seem to have anything decent to look at.

No, unfortunately I don't know of any such place. I think you should just choose a good mouse with high DPI because OS X has a very slow acceleration curve. I'd say go for Razer or Logitech (lot of people dig the MX-1000)

cool, thanks for the advice.

@assagai - I'm also using the MS Bluetooth Mouse 5000 and I actually love it. Seems imo that its working fine under OS X all these 2 years i've been using it.

Though my next choice should the MS one pack up, would be the new-ish Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M555b. Looks really nice.

That's what I'm using, and I like it.
How long has it lasted?

if your usb mouse isn't moving smoothly at slow speeds with mac then you need USB Overdrive. It works like a charm. I will still get the magic mouse though.

I would recommend most, if not all Logitech mouses mice rodents. I've personally had a G5 gaming mouse for 2 years and it recently died on me, so I contacted Logitech in a flash and the woman I delt with told me the warranty had expired but that they'd still send me a replacement cause they're awesome.

Anyway it turns out that the G5 has a 3 year warranty and I was entitled to a new one anyway, but the fact that they were willing to sort me out regardless was a huge plus in my books. Maybe something worth considering?

Logitech Control Center for Macintosh or something similar for other mouses mice rodents is all you need for OS X.

I have been using a Logitech Anywhere MX with my Mac Mini and I am very impressed with it. I also use SteerMouse and again very impressed with it.

Logitech is a good choice.

I have one too and I also loved the mouse until it got the shakes. It would shake, or rather vibrate around the same little point.

Well, You can go for Logitech G9 Laser Mouse, I have it at home and I have nothing bad to say about it. It’s small enough for my girlfriend’s hand. You can adjust its weight to your needs. Has various coves for sweaty hands, for grip, for smoothness and you can purchase other covers besides the two included in the package.

Graphire4, I don't think they make them anymore, replaced by the Bamboo range. What makes it different from other cordless mice is that they are powered by induction from the tablet. i.e. no batteries. Now you might not think that shoving two AA batteries around all day is a big deal, until you have to do it :-)
