Christmas Reading

It is not too late to get this for your dad

Learning Web Design, Third Edition

@ Exclusive -- or from that Damn computer book monopoly "INTERSOFT"

Had a look at it & I am by no means any expert but it is a book I would purchase -- IF it was cheaper

-1 for an old thread resurrected.

However, to answer the question, Joomla is easier to "get into", but Drupal is far easier to change to your liking once you're "into" it. Joomla tends to be a bit on the stiff side, which helps if all you want to do is use the provided modules. Drupal is easier to extend, but of course that makes it slightly more difficult to learn - although this has improved tremendously with the last version or two to leave the stable.

Have a look at something like this FIRST:

http://www.weebly.com

[it's free, you can build quite a functional and professional site in minutes ].

Now weebly is not the only service of its kind, it's just the one i've used recently. The free service doesn't have any ads and you can get pretty far. Even if you use it to make a CONCEPT SITE , i suggest try it...nothing to lose . You basically get a bunch of pre-definied modules which you drag and drop on your site [forum/shopping carts/guestbooks/video/audio etc].

Places like Hetzner [local] and Godaddy.com offer similar "site builders" , but you pay for it and usually you can combine this with your own code [something weebly don't quite do].
I know Godaddy.com gives you a very nice site builder equal if not better to weebly which you can quickly roll out instantly and then you can go and code your own database related stuff if your site actually needs it.

And if you're into a more VISUAL/MEDIA site requirement...check out http://www.wix.com . You build a flash site, main emphasis is on graphics and animations..so it works awesome if you're building a photography type of site that needs some special touches :)

Main reason i recommend these things? If you build a site with your own code = YOU are going to be the sucker that needs to maintain it FOREVER. This is especially the case if you're doing it for family...trust me, give them a tool to do it themselves.....or at least allows you to do it easily.

As I mentioned above, Joomla is beautiful if you are prepared to use a pre-defined template/theme (of which there are many) and the extensions (of which there are many) - but if you want to define your own theme, Drupal is the way to go.

Bear in mind that this is based on my own experience - I believe Joomla has improved dramatically over the last 3 years - my Joomla experience harkens back to the dark ages, circa Joomla v1.6 :erm:.

Check these out for a good read:
Drupal vs. Joomla: a frank comparison from an IBM consultant
Wordpress vs Joomla vs Drupal

@diabolus: I would rather use a CMS I know and trust, and can host anywhere for a family member. That way I have control, and can still give said member the tools to maintain their own site. Much easier on support. Using hosted builders means I have to learn yet another idiosyncratic tool to be able to support the family. Not gonna happen.

Joomla is really simple to setup and maintain. The hardest part is getting your mind around how the themes work and customising a theme for your particular use. I've never worked with Drupal however so can't really comment on it. Wordpress on the other hand I've used a lot and love it as a blog, lately they've been adding more and more features/plugins so Wordpress can now do a lot more than just blog, it's also very straight forward to use.

Just my 2 cents.

Like AcidRazor said, if you need a good site, get someone who studied web design / development... I mean, if you need your tooth fixed, you don't read on the internet how to do it, you go to a dentist...

Like when people tell me "you should show me how photoshop works some time" or "show me how to make a letterhead in word", i want to vomit. "Yeah sure, I've been using photoshop for 12 years, after I did a course to learn it, i'll come show you how it works quick!! "... or when showing someone how to make a letterhead become me making them a letterhead...

/rant

I agree that Joomla is a great CMS to make quite a powerful website with. There's a lot of tutorials on youtube.com that you can check it, made me understand it quite fast... just make sure you keep the version updated and your permissions are correct after instalaltion, etc... these get targeted and spotted by hackers.
