Hey, I have a budget of +-R7000 and want a 17 " screen and desent graphics card, will use notebook of studing and gaming, I saw a Mecer Xpression W860C for R6200 Intel Core i5- 540M Processing
Intel PM55 Chipset
Windows 7 Home Premium
4GB DDR3 Memory
500GB HDD
nVidia GeForce GTX 460M 1GB Graphics

Is mecer any good, why is it so cheap compairing to other brands ?
This will be my first notebook so I would like your advice, any other options I should consider ?

Holy smoke that is insane.

Shop63 look legit, they have contact numbers and that is the first thing i look for, not that it means much but a landline is always a good thing. Google doesn't have any reports on a scam or anything so i cannot see that they are an issue.

There is also an Acer kicking around with same spec for under R7k, and a couple of hundred more you can buy the extended warranty for 3 years.

Just remember a 17" inch laptop is going to be heavy if your going to be backpacking it around much,a 15" is alot less burden.

Ram & hdd is easy to update yourself & seen as your intending to game on it try pushing for the best graphics you can get for the amount you want to spend - graphics you can't change/update later on.
A good site here for current laptop graphics benchmarks
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Pretty decent price for that Mecer with that 460M GPU - current benchmark #46
Maybe see what you can find that has a 580M in it - current benchmark #16

I am going to watch this thread closely. Im in exact same position. Need lappie for Study(final year engineering), lil decent gaming now and then, TIGHT BUDGET

17" is a real bummer to carry around but....with the right specs and a decent bag(targus XL) you'll end up doing it for the performance and the fact that most support 2 2,5" hdd's which means quite a lot of entertainment will be with you at all times. for gaming my dv7 rocks, 80ish fps in cod BO constantly.

I love mine but other people hate it so I guess it depends from person to person.

Thanks for the information, I will probably order a Mecer Xpression W860 C from shop 63 tonight, will let you know how the shops services is and how the notebook runs.

Okey. Took the dive and bought the mecer. Waiting for delivery. Have you recieved yours Arc?

If you don't mind please post some pics of the laptop when it arrives, also post back regarding the build quality :).

Does this laptop (the Mecer) have USB3.0 and E-SATA by any chance? It has the older PM55 so I'm guessing only USB2.0...any idea how many ports though?

How many available RAM slots does it have and any idea if it can be upgraded to 8GB?
