I have recently upgraded to a 1000/1000 mb's line. I was on 400/400 and since the upgrade i have not been able to get anywhere close to that speed using several different speed tests. I have a AC1200 tenda as well as their AC1200 Cuddy router which is more that sufficient as i have used it previously with 1gb's line speed.

At the moment i am only getting max 390 / 390 which is in line with my old package, the ISP claims that my line has been upgraded, and also said the same thing about Frogfoot. What is the best way to actually test your line speed because according to the ISP and i quote "A Speed test Means nothing". I am fed up fighting with these guys. any advice

Are you testing on a wired connection or wifi?

Who is your ISP?

Have you tried testing by plugging a laptop directly into the ONT?

You posted your number in another thread.

I tried alerting it to your attention by using @ followed by your username, but the system wouldn't accept it.

Hence this reply here.

Suggest you delete your number in the public post, amend the message as you see fit, then send your details to the Cool Ideas rep/s via private message ; just tap on their names to access that option.

Why is he contacting CoolIdeas?
ISP is GR-Wifi aka NCLoud
Garden Route "specialists" it seems.

You'll have to test your speed directly at the ONT/cable modem (I'm not familiar with the equipment you mentioned in the OP), bypassing your router - there's no other way of determining if the problem is on your end or theirs.

Edit: if you're able to, post photos of the routers and the cables connecting to them

i have no idea how to do that
Ok. Perhaps Google it and check, it's pretty straightforward. It's one of the reasons one might get slower than expected speeds on your network. Failing that, do what the above post said and test your speed directly at the ONT.

I think the public post has since been deleted, but it had to do with "Domzi" requesting one of them at CI to make contact (to switch ISP) and the cell number was included in the post.

I naturally didn't reply to it as it would've remained there with the number included - though in retrospect I could've deleted it or put stars etc in its place.

Not that important now ...

i do not have internet connected straight to the ONT, i wil test
You need to create a manual connection in windows - your ISP should be able to walk you through the process if you can’t figure it out using Google
The ISP is not helpfull at all. They keep on telling me and sending me screenshots of their system saying i am on 1000/1000 while i did a speed test with them on the phone and they could see the same as me on the speed test. But in the same sentence they tell me a speed test means nothing to a ISP. Now i want to ask what other way can you as a consumer test your line at home if a speed test means nothing to these guys

1. Plug Ethernet cable from laptop into the Ethernet connector on the ONT

2. Go to network settings in windows and create a new PPoE connection

3. Enter your username and password as per the details provided by ISP (ie the same credentials as on the router)

Voila! You should be connected.

Run test.

If you still get the same result, call ISP and ask to be escalated to next level of technical support - wash, rinse and repeat until you get to a level where you’re dealing with an actual tech and not a glorified tech support protocol monkey.

If all else fails, downgrade back down to 300 meg line and initiate ISP switch OR live with 300 meg

PS - why specifically do you need a 1 gig line?

Thank you i managed to connect straight to the ONT and the speed test shows the same only managing to get 390/390 so thats nowhere close to what i should get. To answer your question about why do i need such a fast line: i can ask a guy driving a porsche why he drive that. Point im.making here is i am not getting what i am paying for and also not getting any real support from someone that knows what he is doing. They want me to pay a cancelation fee if i want to move now,but they do not provide me with the service i pay for. What are my options? Ombudsman?

Vary the speedtest server that you are using. Many hosted speedtest servers in South Africa especially in Slaapstad are not very good at measuring high speed as they are installed on a VM attached at 1gbs. And they don't see the point in upgrading to 10gbs. Also would help if they put those servers on bbr.
Use afrihost, MTN and Vodacom as examples.

That looks like the speed that a USB NIC would max out on. What are you using as a NIC?
