Hi there,

Sorry if this has been covered before but I'm pretty new to the whole SIP world...

I'm looking for a free SIP account that allows incoming and outgoing calls to other SIP providers. Preferably they should also support g.729

I have found sip2sip.info and they seem to be "open" to all other SIP providers - just not sure which codecs they support.

Any suggestions on a good, free, open SIP provider???

Have a look at FNB Connect, I set it up on a Grandstream HT502... You get a 087 number, includes Free on net calls and their current promo price of 25c per min to any other network.

Thanx man, but I have some family abroad that are also looking into going the SIP route - unfortunately they won't be able to register with FNB Connect seeing they need SA ID numbers etc...

The Grandstream HT502 looks pretty good though - I'm stuck between buying a SIP router or a cordless phone that supports SIP...

The Softphone or sip device determines the codec, the sip provider normally just route the call and could not be bothered what
codec is used.

What about using skype ? You can also buy 'airtime' to call land lines and mobile, we use it all the time to call all over

Thanx man, I currently use Skype with credit but am trying to move towards a "home phone" that is connected to a SIP account. This way my family can call each other to their "home phones" for free - no need to worry about computers etc.

I found a pretty decent SIP provider - Callcentric - they allow incoming and outgoing calls to other SIP providers and have great setup instructions for many ATAs. They also have a pretty good online web interface :) Schweeeeeet :)

Pity you're too late to sign up with Gizmo5. Great provider, free gizmo-to-gizmo calls, and good prices for dial out to landlines.
Look at any of the betamax companies for calling otherwise. (I'm pretty sure calls between users are free)

Haha - I actually have a Gizmo5 account - signed up for one years ago (it still works). Just gonna be a problem getting Gizmo5 accounts for the family now - trying to keep us on the same SIP provider for ease of use whilst still having the option of calling other SIP providers. Callcentric seems pretty good in that regard seeing you can also setup SIP uri's as speed dials online :)

Checking the rates for outbound calls as well, Gizmo is 1.4c (USD) more expensive per minute. Callcentric is a nice find, have you managed to test call quality?

Have only tested call quality from Callcentric to other SIP providers - quality has been awesome so far. Haven't tried to a regular PSTN line yet...

Now I need to trace down a Linksys PAP2T so I can attatch my cordless phone to it :)

I'm running the Linksys SPA3102 - got mine from Miro.

Just gave Miro a call - they getting the SPA-3102 in again on Thursday - guess I'll be getting one from them then :) Thanx for the info @ColinR ;)

Gonna cost a pretty penny. They don't come overly cheap. Thing is - I need the FXO port.

True, seems they are between R800 and R1000... Will make sure the family abroad just buys their own ones :)

Guess I'm changing config to callcentric!!

Gizmo5 discontinuing service

Make phone calls from Gmail
If you’re looking for a way to make inexpensive calls from your computer, you can now make phone calls right inside Gmail.* It’s free to call the U.S. and Canada, and the rates are super low for calling the rest of the world.
Teach your phone new tricks with Google Voice
Google Voice* enhances the existing capabilities of your mobile phone, regardless of which phone or carrier you have - for free. It also gives you a single number that rings all of your phones, transcribed voicemail messages, and more.
* Google Voice and calling in Gmail are currently only available to U.S. users

Yip, saw that mail about Gizmo5 this morning. Callcentric has been awesome thus far!!! Just don't use the G729 codec with them if you plan on using a DECT cordless phone (like my Gigaset) - quality is pathetic. But with G711u/a - wow!! Brilliant quality :)
