So i'm not really that tech savvy in the sense that I dont know which makes are best when it comes to hardware.

Atm i'm sporting a 1024mb Nividia 9500gt, I'm looking to upgrade with a budget of round about R2000 (I might be convinced to spend more if its exceedingly worth it)

Since I have no idea what a good graphics card is these days what with the increment of numbers no longer indicating excellence I'd like some advice on what I should get.

Thnx,

Edit: Forgot to mention this is my mobo (for compatibility issues): http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=369

You're better off going the ATi route for now...Coming from a NVidia fanboy, it says a lot.

HD 4890 cards are pretty awesome, but some folks reckon the 5770 is where it's at right now.

You could get quite an awesome upgrade if you are willing to spend R700 more to get a 5850. Otherwise you'll have to go for a 5770, 4890, or perhaps a GTX260. But I say the 5850 is worth the 700 simoleons extra

I put a 4890 in the wife's pc last year (set me back R2500). I am waaaaay impressed with it. It keeps its ground in some games with my GTX280 (I have the factory overclocked XXX version from XFX). I have not seen many new 4890's around lately tho... Its an absolute bargain if you compare to how much my 280 cost (R5900) when I bought it in 2008.

personally, I would not go anything under GTX260 or HD4890... but thats cause I like gaming @1920X1080 with 4XAA...

Go for the 5770.Its cheap for what you get. runs great. and has directx 11. 4890 doesn't have dx 11... and gtx260 sux compared 2 a 5770

Really? Take a look here, the gtx260 performs a bit better then the 5770. The only thing is the 5770 supports dx 11 BUT the gtx 260 has NVIDIA PhysX and the drivers are more stable.

Drivers for each are the same. Neither are that unstable, both companies release driver fixes quite quickly. And physx is the most useless piece of .... I dont regard physx as a selling point at all, especially since DX11 has a whole lot of physx type graphics effects.

5770 performance is disappointing. Although you can get them now for like r1600...which is really good value. But it isn't any faster than a 48701gb card. I'm not saying it's a bad choice, but if you're into framerates a gtx275 or 4890 is going to give you much better performance. But 5770 has other factors that ameliorate its poor speed - very low power consumption, dx11, eyefinity, great xfiring potential.

What are your pc specs?

Dual Core 3.00GHZ
2gig Ram
win7 (32bit)
already mentioned my mobo and current gfx card, any relevant info i'm missing out?

oh and thnx for all the replies thus far! Although opinions differ its greatly narrowed down my choices, less research to do! :D

I want to use a cheap GeForce 8400Gs to link up to a 40' Sony LCD. Would it be able to drive resolution like full HD?
