Hello guys so let me get to the point I am new to ADSL in fact this will be the first time. I need advice on ISPs and line speeds. At the moment I am looking at Afrihost and Mweb 1mbps uncapped accounts bundled with dsl line, but can’t decide which is better.

I will be using at least 2 desktops, 1 laptop, 3 cell phones/tablet. only one desktop is connect with ethernet cable the rest of the devices will be on wifi.

I mostly will be gaming (FSPs, world of warcarft, racing and GTA 5) and downloading games of steam and origin, downloading torrents and watching You Tube videos and general browsing.

NB: only one desktop will be used for gaming the other is for general use.
Do you guys think a 1mbps line is good enough? Can anyone recommend any other ISP. Btw this will be in Johannesburg (not sure about exact place yet), moving there in December.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Most important factor: make sure that your new accommodation is in an ADSL enabled area. Canvass the neighbours, etc....

1Mb/s is fine for gaming.

Avoid mweb, see all the complaints here.

other options besides afrihost, openweb, telkom

get a 2mps line and account.

from november your line will be 4mbs for free then :)

then you can decide to upgrade your uncapped account to 4mb or not , when your line is syncing at 4mb

Afrihost is a good choice for an ISP however I would recommend at least a 2megabit line if you intend to do any sort of streaming and as Ponder said KEEP AWAY FROM MWEB, dialup tends to be faster than their uncapped packages these days

Hi There,
If gaming I would go with a 2MB connection. Afrihost I am with at home and the service from them is superb. Just follow them on twitter to see how they communicate with their clients. Open and transparent.

Regards

Tim

After trying MWEB, Afrihost,Axxess I can say the best support - within hours not days as per the 3 ISP's mentioned will be with Imaginet.

I still can't believe if you e-mail a support desk that after 16-48hours you get a reply e-mail asking if you still have problems. If you answer yes it takes them another 16-48 hours to help. This means you could be without a connection for 4 days.

With the tel no you can do the check on the Telkom website. Otherwise ask anybody living closeby for a tel no and use that no to check on Telkoms site.

Just call Telkom and give them an address, they will give the speeds available. If you want your call answered quickly call at 8:00am, its worked for me this far.
