So I my bro's PC needs a bit of an upgrade. The goal is to get something more decent for games.

So this is what it looks like at the moment:

* core i5 750 (on an asus p7h55-m motherboard) - this also sitting on a huge heatsink+fan combination
* 500gb hdd
* Radeon 7700
* 4gb RAM
* Micro ATX case, in hindsight a silly thing to have done for gaming, especially when the heatsink went in there... that in itself belongs in a fail thread, but anyways ....

Let's assume the monitor he has is okay for now

Now the tricky bit. I think his budget is 12-15k ... so the question is whether to upgrade this setup or get a new setup altogether??

Just upgrade it. Get a proper case, upgrade the ram and the GFX card. If thats his budget, he could get decent card and motherboard. If he is not planning on replacing his monitor, then great.

Keep the PC and buy a GTX 1080...JOIN THE MASTER RACE.

On a serious note if you have experience with building PC's go for it.
If not buy the parts and let PC store assemble it for you.
Wootware if you're in Cape town and
Evetech if you're in Jozi .

At least 8 Gb of ram, then plow whatever is left into best GPU you can buy. Try Carbonite for good second hand deals.

He has a good budget. Register on carbonite and you can pick up a MB+i5-4590+8GB RAM for about R3200. The new AMD RX 480 is supposedly coming out end of this month at around R4-4.5k. For a 1080p gaming rig this would be more than enough.

Evetech can organize a great complete replacement system for that price range.

Depending on what games he plays of course..
If it's not too intensive and you like building stuff yourself I would keep the CPU and motherboard, then buy lotsa nice parts from wootware.

8GB of DDR3 ram is now about 600-700 rand. (2x4GB)

Thanx for the advice

I think at the moment he is going to get a new case, a 120gb SSD, another 4gb RAM and the AMD RX 480 when it releases:

1) Will he be able to game at 1080p, 60fps or will his CPU hold him back?

2) Would gaming at 2K be out of the question with this setup?

Thanx for all your input thus far!

That CPU is rather old and won't give him the same performance as a haswell or skylake i5

So what would you recommend That he buys that's cheap but at the same time will last for a while ?

See post #5, that will still be pretty good and last a while. They are great value for money, scroll back in this thread and you'll see others that have gone that route as well and very happy with their systems.

Also look here http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ild-Thread?p=17655834&viewfull=1#post17655834 for a skylake based build (pricing is most likely out of date) that will push your budget. See what those components cost currently and see if you have R4-5k spare for and RX 480.
