Its an MTN 3g card registred to MTNNS. any advice will be appreciated, I just need a name.

Getting a Subpoena is a waste of time, as the local copshop dont even know what hacking is..

So posting in the Vodacom forum might not be the best place to start?

No provider is going to give you any info without a case number and a subpoena.

Edit: There moved it for you ;)

With very little to go on, how do you know that it is indeed an MTN 3G card? Also, when you say "tried to hack", what do you mean? Did they try and deface your website, for example? Or were there multiple "dictionary" type requests (www.yourdomain.co.za/getsecret.php?password=aardvark...password=zygote)? Or what?

I would not jump too fast to say hacker hacker hacker...

As well as if the "hacker" is using a 3G card on the networks public APN, the IP address will not be static and will be auto assigned a new one each time they logged on...

Hopeless case. In South Africa you are very blessed indeed when it comes to anonymous internet surfing. I believe one can purchase a SIM card without any identification. How on earth are you going to trace that. Even if you know the IP address (a impossibility in itself because of random IP's been issued to begin with), you'll still have the problem to connect the sim card to the user. There are 2 issues here. 1-connect the ip address to a sim card and 2-connect the sim card to a user. I have heard, the laws will change shortly but I am not sure when. Enjoy the freedom while you can :D

RICA "fixed" that - you need ID and proof of residence for a SIM now. If you have a SIM that was activated pre-RICA, you have about a year or so (I think) to get it IDed.

Personally, I think the OP is trying its luck more than anything else. Unless s/he has been to the cop shop, the claim that they do not know what hacking is really lacks validity. I know at my local they certainly do and above that, the main providers have sent through their key contacts for the police for Sect 219 interceptions and reports. And every single investigator or detective there has a a photocopy of this on their desks.

More likely scenario is that OP is trying to trace a third party that sent anon email or chaffed the significant other or something. The cops certainly will open a case for "real" hacking...

I still see a problem. First of all, it won't be that easy to keep records of all users. How on earth do you want to do that. Let's be realistic. How long time do you think will it take for the networks to register everybody and KEEP the data base up to date ? ? ? Let's say, I plan to commit a crime. I go to the local cell shop and report my old cell as lost or stolen. Then I go to the police station and get a case number for my insurance. The thing is, how long will it take until the cell is black listed on all networks? If you phone today vodacom to see if a cell is black listed, first question they ask is 'was it a vodacom cell'? Stupid I know but this is how it goes. Networks are not interested in taking/blocking cell phones off their networks.

What will the real criminals do?.

Will they give real address?
Those in historic disadvantaged settlements only need a letter from the chief saying that they live in this/or that camp
No real fixed address.

Will drug lords gun smugglers pimps etc give real addresses?

Planning a real baddy crime??
Take school kid hostage (or worse kill them) for their cell phone sim card combination.

Or perhaps the smash and grabs at robots will increase.
Now how will they stop that?
