Need Help Understanding a SoftCap

Hey everyone!

Now I know the title seems weird, but hear me out.

You see, I have a 20GB SoftCap package from Telkom on a 2Mbps line. Now, the thing that I don't get and never really bothered to ask is how does this SoftCap work. I've always assumed that if I go over my 20GB in the month, I will have to pay overage, but I don't know whether this is the case. I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out with this, as I'd like to know if going over my allowance is going to cost me extra. Reason being, my sister enjoys sitting on Instagram all day, and that really eats the cap.

Softcap basically means that your connection wont die. Your speed will decrease however. So if you finish the 20GB cap, you can still use the internet, it will just be alot slower

No, after 20 gig day time data your line speed drops to 384 Kbps. Facebook is zero data rate part of the surf social media for free. Maybe email telkom and ask if Instagram is part of the free social media.

You can choose to TopUp your SoftCap at any point but it won't automatically make you pay extra if you go past 20GB.

If you use your 20GB your line speed will be greatly reduced, think 40kB/s, but you won't be capped or if you want your full speed back you can choose to TopUp the account.

So essentially. Once my 20GB is done, my connection is uncapped, but severely throttled?

Also, at the end of last month I checked my Internet Usage, and I Finished my Data, But I was still getting my full line speed. Any idea about that?

How did you check your usage?

You should (currently, there will be something new soon ...) check your usage here if you want to see how far you are from being soft-capped.

But I was still getting my full line speed. Any idea about that?

Most likely, you used more than 20GB, but only including the other free data (NightSurfer, Social/Education etc.).

First off, thanks for the help Ranger.
Yes I use the titracker portal to check my usage. On the 30th of last month the usage was at 20GB with 0 bytes left. Also, my Night surfer usage was at 90GB... Yep I managed to pull a total of 90GB of downloads in a month on this connection. And my social media usage was at 8GB.
About the full line speed, I'm just gonna classify it as Telkom being generous towards me

On a side note. Could anyone suggest a good ISP to switch to. I'm paying R400 a month for this package and would like an upgrade that is either uncapped or a higher cap. Please include the line rental in the suggestion. Thanks a bunch to all of you!
