Hi mybroadband.

I have a friend who has been harassed by a private number for over a year now. The caller usually calls in the middle of the night and doesn't say anything. They call back if hung up on. And dont say anything if answered. This happens three of four times a week.

Does anyone know of anything or anyone that can help us?

- You can't unmask it.
- Put your phone in Flight mode when you go to bed. I'm sure all of us has had this problem, and this is the solution I use.

Yep. Only solution. And if you do answer when the call just put the phone down while they are still on the line. waste as much of their money as you can.

One can block ALL private numbers, though one might miss a few legit calls. Last resort: consider changing cell number and not sharing it in personal details on Skype, Facebook etc.

My phone is on silent in the middle of the night. It only allows priority calls from a list of known numbers.

Report a case to the SAPS and have them subpoena the Service provider for the number

according to another forum
1. Go to your nearest police station and lay a charge.
2. Take the docket no. to your service provider MTN/VODACOM/CELL C etc.
3. They will then provide you/Police with the persons contact details.

Could they actually do it though - perhaps with a court order?
It can only be done via a court order.

And you will have to put forward a convincing argument for the magistrate to sign it off.

And you will not get the number - SAPS will get it, not you.

You then have to decide whether you want to proceed with the case that you opened and if you are prepared to go to court when the other party appears.

So in the OP's friend's case:
  1. He/She goes to the police to lay a charge and tries to show enough evidence of the harassing calls over the past year. (call records, recordings etc.)
  2. Then it's in a detective's hands to get the court order to get the RICA info about the caller from the cellular service provider.
  3. He/She decides to proceed with the court case or not

Yep. He/she can also very nicely ask the detective to have a quiet chat to the stalker...

Who's the ex girlfriend or boyfriend that should be the first suspect

The wife says he/she should answer with loud serial killer music in the background. Might make him/her reconsider.

The other option is tell a joke every day and wait for a laugh. It might help in identifying the person. Needle in the haystack method I know but just a thought.

Dont know about cellphone to cellphone,

But here's an idea, we used to get harassed regularly from overseas.

What we did was clever, foward all calls to cellphone number,
Apparently this unmasked the private number, not sure if forwarding cell to cell works though.
