Hi guys

I need to upgrade my ancient desktop so i need help with parts

My old pc was an amd 2.8 ghz single processor with a 6600gt card and like 1.5gig ram and 80 gig hdd

i want to use the same chassis and power supply so i just want to add the new parts in there

I have seen these components and was wondering if someone could help advice if they would fit together and if this would be a good build ...pc to be used mainly for work purposes and to watch movies and stuff on it

1 -Intel Core i5 2300 Processor-2.80GHz, Socket 1155, 6MB L3, 2.0Gb/s DMI Interface (R1229 )
2 - ASUS P8H61-M LE - CORE I5 AND CORE I3 PROCESSORS (SUPPORTS INTEL 32NM CPU)- MICRO ATX FORM FACTOR, 2X DDR3 (MAX 16GB 1333MHZ), 1X PCI EXPRESS 2.0 X16, 2X PCI EXPRESS 2.0 X1, 1X PCI, 4X SATA 3.0GB/S, 10X USB 2.0, 10/100/1000 GB LAN, REALTEK ALC887 8 CHANNEL HIGH DEF AUDIO (R569)
3 - Kingston 4.0GB DDR3 1333MHZ Non ECC Desktop Memory Module(PC3-10600 240-Pin 2 Rank DIMM)CL9 (R296)
4 -Spinpoint 1.0 TB Serial ATA Hard Drive ( SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache) (R449)
5 - Point Of View GF430 1GB DDR3 64-BIT, Core speed 700 MHz, Memory Speed 1000 MHz, Shader clock 1400 MHz ( R479 ) ( reason this card is hdmi out )

the prices are excl vat ....if anyones knows cheaper please let me know

your help would be highly appreciated

What power supply do u have?

If u open the side panel of ur pc and look at the power supply u should see what power supply it is...
We cant really help u on ur upgrade as we dont know what your power supply can do for the system u want to upgrade to...
Seems like your old system would run just fine on a 350w but i dont think it would be a good idea for ur new build...
So we need to know what power supply u have to be honest u will probably have to upgrade that as well... And maybe even upgrade ur chassis...lol :)

You can save a few bucks by going for a motherboard with HDMI output - eg. MSI H67MA-E35

Important:
Just make 100% sure that the RAM that you're buying is rated for 1.5V and NOT like 1.65V !

Maybe im being a little stupid but what does buying a mobo with hdmi output have to do with saving bucks?

thanks for that and how would i know if my chassis can handle the compnents lol

its one of those big cases that have glass side panels and i think 2 fans ....will check up and update ....

Your biggest worry is your gpu. Will it fit? it should fit.
2nd worry, is your psu gonna be ontop of the chassis or at the bottom?
always better at the bottom for heat issues.Newer cases have at the bottom mostly.

Sorry hugo69er, I should've said that you could go for the motherboard that has HDMI output and then you ditch the PCI-E graphics card.
By ditching the graphics card you will save money.

If you're planning to play graphics demanding games, then I won't recommend onboard video or an Nvidia Geforce 430 card.
The integrated GPU of the i5 2300 is rather poor compared to the Nvidia GT430, but the GT430 is also rather poor compared to the HD5770.
See http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_430/28.html for the GT430 vs HD5770
and http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i5_2500K_GPU/8.htmlfor the Intel HD3000 (which is already faster than the HD2000 that comes with the i5 2300) vs GT430.

The minimum graphics card that I'll recommend for gaming is the HD5770 1GB model for like R1k.

my tower has a psu at the top and its a 350w one ....

I'm slightly confused about this hdmi business when he has a 430 card on the list. What kind of games will you be using this rig for?

my pc is not going to be used for gaming ...not a single game to be loaded on ....i want the hdmi for convenience ...i have a full hd monitor wid hdmi and a tv lcd with hdmi

so if a motherboard has a hdmi out then i guess i dont need the grafix card ....

So Pada was correct in saving you money...

Personally that psu will be no good imho.
Its old and its weak...instead of a gfx card get a better psu...u can pick nice ones up for about R500+ for ur build...

so i should look for a motherboard that has a hdmi out .....if i get a motehrboard like that it will have vga as well ? so that i dont have to connect all the time with hdmi

and i think ok good idea new box and psu also

Yes, it will still have vga as well...

I would go for something like this as long as you not planning on upgrading to a.gaming rig anytime soon.

If you know that you're not going to install a high-end graphics card in your PC, then something like the MUKii Asroc 400W PSU would suffice and it retails for ~ R300.

The reason why you don't want to use an old ATX PSU would be due to the specifications that changed - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX#Recent_specification_changes_and_additions if you really want to get more into detail regarding that.
If your PSU is relatively new (3 years or so), then it should probably be fine to continue using it. At the bare minimum you'll need a PSU with a 24-pin main connector, 4-pin CPU power connector, and a few molex/SATA power connectors.

i guess this becomes very tricky when building your own pc ...

thanks for the help

i need to look at options or maybe just buy a standard pc box and add a grafix card from a suitable pc shop

If you're not going to play games, then there is absolutely no reason why you should install a graphics card when you can get a motherboard with video outputs.

I agree
