I would like some advice on how to make a SOHO network with Neotel's Neoflex Data
3g Gateway (modem/router) and a small server. Is this the right way to go or should I rather do something different.

Depends on what you need to do. MS Small Business Server is made for small business and has a mail server, proxy etc. It depends on how much you want to spend and what exactly you want to do.

It depends on so many things and we'll need more info to answer this properly. As was said, it depends on what is running on the server...or what you want to run on it...file/print/email/ftp. Also dependant on expertise. SBS has alot, but you pay for it. If you have the expertise to go the linux route then you'll save yourself alot of buck.

My advice would be to look at MS small business server (SBS). Its around R1000-R2000 per user, and offers email, file server, authentication, security and everything you need to run a small business. There are also versions with SQL for applications that require a database.

Linux is an option, but it is not always cheaper.... Don't want to get into a debate over free software, Linux etc :)

So with the SBS option you would connect the Router to a firewall, or use the firewall features on the Router (not sure what the Neotel option has). Connect the server, firewall/router and users to switch. Configure SBS with user/mail accounts, configure email on the SBS server. Configure print/file sharing, internet access; and then you have a SOHO network with Internet, email, security, file/print sharing etc :)
