Need help with network for LTE router and streaming

Hi all,

I need some advice please.

Currently I have an ADSL router. I stream my TV from the US. I use a smart DNS service. On the router I use port forwarding to block google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. I use the router DHCP to give custom DNS addresses to clients. And so my streaming works.

Now I got a Huawei B618 LTE router. Now this router doesn't offer port forwarding and the DHCP server options are limited to start and end IP. I need a device that can run the LAN - DHCP and port forwarding that connects to the Huawei for internet. Perhaps a Mirkotik with a LAN/WAN port to connect to the Huawei?

Any ideas?

I need to be able to give out custom DNS to DHCP clients and need to block outgoing traffic to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - on the ADSL router I set up port forward to forward requests for those two IP's to non existent gateways.

Tollbox should be able to configure on B618 DNS server of your choice and work as DNS proxy for this server for DHCP clients. After you change DNS, restart router and all devices on the LAN, as devices maintain local DNS cache and they are unaware of the change.

Your second requirement is blocking on the B618 some clients from accessing Google DNS servers. You can do it with LAN IP filter. I think this option present on B618. Please give feedback if you need more assistance. A filtered client must be configured to use a static IP, as Huawei LTE routers do not have IP reservation option. It may be a problem if device do not have such option.

You see that is the prob...I don't want to config every phone, tablet and PC with a static IP. The 618 does have IP filter option but its not feasible for me. I am gonna look for a netgear router with a LAN/WAN RJ45 port. That should solve my probs.

If the ADSL router have a ethernet wan port, connect it to a lan port on the B618 and use the B618 as a dumb modem.

Sure, it would, I noted it in my first reply.

For workaround you can configure on B618 very small DHCP pool - just big enough to accomodate all your devices. Then create IP filter entries for all IP addresses in DHCP range.

Surely you meant static routing and not port forwarding?

OK - bought a TP-LINK TD-W8970. I have everything set up in this way now:

TP-LINK DHCP giving clients the two DNS servers of the smart DNS service I use and the gateway IP of the LTE router. Wifi is set up on the TP-LINK. I can access the internet now all good and the smart DNS service registers. But I still cannot watch Hulu. It tells me 'video not available in this location' which tells me I am not successfully blocking requests to google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

If I set up static routing on the TP-LINK it doesn't work. I can still ping the google dns servers and Hulu still gives the error. The google chromecast is the reason why I need to block the google dns servers. So I am guessing I need to block the google DNS servers on the LTE router - 618 - but it doesn't have a static routing option, only LAN IP Filter etc. and I don't know how to use those to achieve my goal. Any help?

OK - figured it out. Set up two IP LAN FIlter rules for the Chromecast and added the MAC of the Chromecast as an exclusion in the DHCP so all good now! THanks for all the help guys. Now just need a set of booster antennas for the 618 :)
