Hi guys

So I am new on the forum. I need advice for a laptop my budget is R 6500 - R 7000 I will be using this laptop for mostly for programing (Delphi), CAD, Solid Works and other general things such as browsing and playing games. I they are not for gaming but just to pass time at low-medium settings (mostly FPS and racing).http://www.comx-computers.co.za/Buy-Notebooks-Laptops-LENOVO-G500s-59387180-Lenovo-lp-78552.php and http://www.comx-computers.co.za/Buy-Notebooks-Laptops-ACER-E1-571-I5-Acer-Aspire-E1-lp-79065.php the ACER E1-571-I5 has a Nvidia gt 710m discrete graphics and the Lenovo IdeaPad 500s has a HD 4000 and both have I5-3230 M. I don't mind any suggestions please help.

Thank you.

The Acer would fare better at gaming, because it has a rebranded GT540M that was mostly okay. It'll mainly run games at low settings at native resolution and some shooters may be more taxing on it than others. If you can spare the cash, I'd suggest you look at the Gigabyte Q1542N. It has better graphics and still bundles in a Core i5 processor.

You can also try looking in stores like Incredible Connection and GAME for bargains when they sell off their demo models. For example, Incredible's selling off this Lenovo Y570. Stop by your local CNA as well and see what lappies they have available.

Unless you're servicing the CAD requirements seriously, you have no chance meeting those requirements at this level so you may as well just optimise for the [-]fannying about[/-] light gaming and live with CAD/SW working as best they can in the circs.

What type of video card do you recommend?

NVidia Quadro series or ATI FireGL/FirePro series. Although SolidWorks might work with any generic graphics card, a graphics card with hardware OpenGL acceleration will provide superior performance, especially in 3D model viewing (redraws, spins, zooms and pans).

Video cards designed for “gaming” or multi-media applications do NOT offer maximum performance for SolidWorks and other 3D CAD applications. Game/multi-media cards are optimized for a low number of polygons displayed on the screen, and a high frame rate. CAD applications have essentially the opposite requirement, polygon count is high (all the details in your design model) and the image does not change rapidly, so high frame rates are not as critical. Also, these days, graphic processing units (GPUs) are very powerful; therefore they are used for operations beyond the scope of video processing. Using a certified videocard + driver combo will yield the most stable platform for running SolidWorks.

The last time a client wanted a notebook for this we went for an HP EliteBook 8560W. But, as always, YMMV
