I used HandyMap PC 2005 for a long time but all of a sudden it shows as expired so can't use it any more ar find updates for th SA maps.

Any suggestions as to what PC software is availably.

thanks but does Google use up a lot of broadmand?

For Garmin users, MAPSOURCE, but you need an unlock code and your device ID

Veza Routeplanner

I used to use this. I eventually dumped it because the damn thing refused to work. I had to keep emailing them to authorize the thing to work again for no reason. there was also no phone number. And if you phoned the CSIR and asked for the veza guys, they didn;t know anything about it.

+1 for google maps. they are the most up to date right now in preparation for SWC.

SWC, when do you expect it to happen?

I also find openstreetmap.org the best when searching maps online.

If you are prepared to pay a relatively small amount, you could use the Tracks 4 Africa mapsets. These maps are formulated from actual tracklogs submitted by experienced users, and tend to be more accurate than road tracings from existing GIS maps.

They are also GoogleEarth partners and their maps are available as a layer in GE.

Emphasis used to be the recording of tracklogs for 'the roads less travelled' but much in-city data is now available. The maps are also routable. All of Africa is covered.

You will require the Garmin Mapsource application though, to view and manipulate data on your PC.
