Hi guys and girls,

My wife is pregnant and so we need to get a bigger car (we drive a Nissan Micra at the moment). We found a Merc C180K auto elegance for R139 900. It is a 2006 model with 96000km. I have had it checked out by a really good mechanic and he says the car is in perfect condition. I have driven it and love it. But, while trying to sell the Micra, other dealers have said I am paying too much for the car. Has anyone owned one. Is it worth it? Am I paying way to much?

Really would appreciate any input.

Thanks!

Sounds like a decent deal, especially if the mechanic says it is in perfect knick and you love the car. Just make sure that things like the cam-belt are double checked properly at that mileage...

My C200 has just under 200'000km on it now and the engine is still in ship-shape. Take care of these cars and they last forever.

@OP, it's a decent deal. Low mileage for it too. Awesome car too.

Yup,, snapped my cam belt which took out valves = costly. I think its past due(most cars are due 90-100k km) to cam belt at 96k km, so suggest changing if it wasnt?

Good deal, but take it back to the mech to do a full diagnostic scan just to make sure.

Wow, thanks for all the feedback! Going to phone the mechanic tomorrow morning to find out how much it would cost if/when the timing chain needs changing.

I see on auto trader a BMW E90 320i 2008 with 132000 KM for R149,995

Thats not bad either.

Have you test driven some of the other players in that region? BMW, Audi etc? I always like to look at the relevant competitors before I buy.

Also as stated in another thread, have you considered a 2009+ Honda Accord, its in the price range and comes with many nice features.

Otherwise the Merc is a very good car and I'm sure you will be happy with it

Call me boring have you thought about getting a brand new sedan with a motor plan? Kids can be expensive you don't need unforeseen expenses that may come with a 7 year old car.

The C-Class is the best car in its class. Unless you are getting a E46 with a straight 6 engine there is no reason to consider other cars from the same year and class.
