According to Autotrader.... 2006 are retailing by dealers at around 90 -100k.
So yeah, you would pay too much.

That car has 231000km. A big big big way off 96000km... and it's a manual.

So many things wrong with that listing. Firstly it is not a diesel and secondly the 180K, 200K and 230K are all 1.8L engines. Only difference is the boost of the supercharger.
Correct. It does however have Avantgarde wheels. It does looks like an Classic (Elegance has a greenish tint, Avantgarde blue), but with leather seats and the colour-coded handles.
Big mixmatch going on there.

Psrsonally, at 7 years the OP's suggested buy is out of warranty. To me that kinda negates the KM discussion.
That vehicle is out of warranty, meaning own pocket repairs. The KM of my sample, I would not really stress much unless the KM were 350km and counting ar that age.
I would pay max 10-15k more for an auto of the manual version.

Of course KM always matters, especially for an out of warranty car!
Things like engine and gearbox only last so long before they need to be rebuilt. The more KMs a car has on it, the more likely it needs some major work done on it. Unless you are VERY lucky and the previous owner has done some major work. Even then, you dont know if he had the engine rebuilt by his friend for R50 and a bottle of brandy.

And that is only 130k. ...

Well to boost that for you, between 100k and my now 196k, I've had only one bummer, the oxygen sensors, but it can fail on any car, and without warning.
Add also though, the shocks need to be replaced at 120'000, and that's a decent R8000 for the W203.
Although you need to consider, that with a good example being the W203 Merc, if you take care of your car you shouldn't need any sort of rebuilding whatsoever under 250'000-300'000km.

Question to OP - can you afford a new R200k car? If not, you can't afford a R139k, old car.
That R60k difference is what you should have available over the next 5 years for expensive repairs and maintenance without going into debt.
When I look to buy second hand cars, I always buy one that I could afford new, but choose to go second hand because you can save 25% or more off the new price. But I know that I need to be sure I could repair it with cash/savings if necessary.

A lot more than R1200. It's a fair bit of labour to replace it, and there's 4 of them.

:wtf: Yikes, mine was with labour include, really easy cause it just screws into the manifold. Guess that's why I still drive Opels, I can't afford Mercedes.
are you hell bent on a merc? they are helluva reliable and will suit you well for the purpose. The only gripe is the lack of warranty/motorplan. even aftermarket ones wont even cover half the price of some of the parts on a merc.
if you are not brand conscious or watever... have a look at a honda accord. 2009 model or better.
amazing value for money, you will find one that still has some service plan, maybe even lucky enough on a 2010 to still have factory warranty. its a honda so you wont really need a warranty

but yes the value for money on the new accords cannot be matched. period.As a seller and buyer of cars, I will not have insurance companies dictate to me the value of a car. The book value of some of my cars are well under 50k but I have offers on them three to four times more than that.
Yeah look, those wienie thingies are expensive, but running costs on my Merc has been less than some of our previous cars. Fuel consumption is also ridiculous (6.5l/100km C200K automatic on the highway, and 8.5 in the city if I'm rustig).
