There seems to be a common misconception that you can just plug a replacement PCB onto a faulty HDD and it will work again. There are a few things that needs to be considered:
a) There are many components that can fail. Read/write heads, motor, media (platter) damage, firmware, PCB etc. You need to establish which part is actually causing the problem. No use replacing a component that isn't actually faulty.
b) You can't just put on a new PCB, it won't work. Even if the board is identical, on modern drives the drive will not initialise and will not function. Adaptive information, that pertains specifically to that individual drive, is stored in ROM on the PCB. So if you swap the PCB with a new one, you need to move that adaptive data too.
c) With some drives, if you put a non-native PCB onto the drive, you will cause even more damage and complicate the matter further.
Yeah but as far as I know its fine to do it with identical boards for the seagate 7200.9 series and have done it with success with these drives.
If he doesn't want to take the risk he should get hold of you, or www.intratec.co.za(only data recovery company I've used) or there are a quite a few others around. He's probably looking at around R1000-R1500 if they can get his data back.
My 2c Intratec are very good from my experience with them and basically you only pay them if they can recover your data which is a big plus
All DR services are, or most certainly should be, a "No recovery, no cost" service, as it's nonsensical to want to charge if you don't recover anything![]()
Why is professionalism and service like this so hard to find? South_Bit, our telecoms industry needs YOU!
