So turns out that some of the timeout issues I've been having have been caused by my router. I don't know why, since it's connected to a UPS so it shouldn't get boned by loadshedding, but it is. I'm currently plugged straight into the fiber box and dialing out via PPoE and I haven't had the usual big ping timeouts that I sometimes get. So I'm looking to get a router to fix my problems. Here's what I was thinking.

I purchase one of these to plug into my router.

or

(I need to confirm which one supports fibre)

As recommended by this guy, because it has decent packet management so I can give my gaming traffic super sweet priority:

From there, I take my current Asus router, and turn it into a wifi access point. No-one is gaming on the wifi, so if it has timeouts, no biggy. Already know the timeouts aren't causing issues with streaming so whatever.

Otherwise, if anyone has any suggestions for a decent router with a simple but effective QoS system for 1-2k, I'm open to suggestions.

I didn't watch a video, but I expect what it is suggested here. Maybe you should start from here:

You didn't mention speed of your fiber, but it is important when planing network. QoS is good, but if you can avoid it on the router, your project can be scalable up to 500/500Mbps with this router. With QoS enabled you lose hardware acceleration on this router, it will be only fine up to 50Mbps.

Like in the above project maybe you should consider a managed switch with bandwith limiting. It is how it is done in the industry even with much more expensive equipment. Separate routing from QoS using L3 layer switches. Do your Asus has any traffic limiting capability? Use it.

As for a fiber capability on the router, you don't need it. Gigabit Ethernet connection between router and a fiber box is fine.

Those are practically the same thing one just has PoE, both will work for what you're doing and will be perfect. The guy in the video really knows his stuff, he makes good content.
