So, what I thought would be a simple plug and play solution to get fibre going at my place, isn't gonna happen that easily. Flat has fibre installed, but I have no idea how to connect everything, hoping someone can help, else I'll need to get Webafrica involved (which I really don't want to do tbh)

So I have this box on the wall:Box on wall.jpg

Opened box looks like this:Box on wall - opened 1.jpg

White cable comes from outside, yellow cable has this at the other end:Fibre cable.jpg

At the moment, yellow cable feeds into this:

Now, I got the Zyxel router from WA, but not sure what to do next, cos this is the back of the router:Zyxel BK.jpg

According to the instructions, I'm supposed to connect an ethernet cable from the WAN port to the Fibre box on the wall, but as you can see from the pics, there's kinda impossible. I've tried connecting from the Zyxel to the Dasan' LAN port, with both powered on, but nothing happens.

So is there hope for me to do this on my own, or do I get WA to bring in Octotel?

Connect the Zyxel wan port to the Dasan' LAN port, with both powered on. It should just work as long as the zyxel was supplied by your isp as they would of configured it already.

I'm probably going to sound like the village idiot, but in my line of work, that aqua pigtail is OM3 multimode.

Then, the yellow fly lead going into the Dasan ONT is single mode.

Is it possible that they used a multimode pigtail in a single mode environment?

that aqua pigtail is OM3 multimode.
You're right, but I'm seeing you can buy packs of colour coded single mode pigtails. That aqua pigtail has a thinner jacket than the patch cable, so maybe that's it.

Could I please ask mr g if you could investigate the 'cabling' in the front cassette of the wall box, it looks like there is a lot more to see or is it just loose fibre. please could you also explain what is happening/not happening if anything. Do you know if this connection has ever worked? That pigtail does look out of place unless the buildings internal 'cabling' in multomode fibre, but then you ask why is the patch cable single mode. Definitely makes me wonder if it has ever worked.

So basically the white cable feeds from outside, into the cassette box on the wall, and there are a few different coloured very thin cables that come out that white cable. I'll have to check when I get home again, but these thin cables then join into the single green cable somehow, which loops around and around and plugs into the little box that also has the yellow cable plugged in ... hope that all makes sense. There's a flap that has more cabling:Box on wall - opened.jpg

According to the rental agents, the fibre was definitely working before we moved in.

Am I blind what am I missing? Run a lan cable from the WAN(Blue port) on the router to the LAN port on the dasan??

Is it possible that line has not been "migrated" from the previous tenant's ISP?

Jip, the pigtail does not mean it's OM3, we have a few single mode fibre links with these pigtails.

If it worked before then it should work again unless one of the cables has a break?

I'll give it another go when I get home later, but that's probably the first thing I tried. Everything powered on, ethernet cable attaching the zyxel WAN port to the Dasan LAN port, waited about 10 minutes and still nothing.

Is the router pre-configured?
If not do you know your username and password?
When you get home connect everything and please takes pis of both devices interface lights.
We can also try connecting the laptop directly to the ONT to make a connection.

Is that ONT not locked down to MAC address of the previous owner's router? Or does webafrica not work like that?
Who's the fibre provider? Vumatel?

@Zuner, @LandyMan you are right but this obvious solution has already been suggested(see 2nd post) and i don't think it works although the OP hasn't actually said so. @LOTR I suspect you may be right and migration hasn't happened. Mr G please could you update us on your transfer of account process, did anyone confirm your transfer and that the line is up and running? If this was working before and hasn't been tampered with the problem probably lies with your cable co/service provider. Please let us know what you think. I know you want to avoid having to deal with them but you may have to, sorry.

Zyxel is preconfigured by WA, and I have the username and password. I'll connect everything up later again, and connect my laptop as well to see what I can figure out.

Seems like if it doesn't work out tonight, I might have to get both octotel & WA involved.

So basically the white cable feeds from outside, into the cassette box on the wall, and there are a few different coloured very thin cables that come out that white cable.
So basically the thin coloured cables coming out of the big white cable are the actual fibre optic cables, covered with a coloured sheath. They're referred to as cores in this situation.

It looks like they've fed you with a 6 core cable. I don't know why so many, because they only use one to actually connect you to the internet.

The thicker aqua coloured cable is a pigtail (short cable length with a plug already attached, because it's cheaper and more efficient than putting your own plugs on) which is fused to one of the coloured lines in a process called splicing.

The cassette with all the loops is there because they leave a lot of slack in case of problems, and fibre lines need a minimum bend radius to avoid breaking or signal loss.

I think stop worrying about the actual fibre link coming in and just the ONT and what comes after it.

Assuming of course you didnt' break anything in opening it all up.

Most likely it's a configuration issue at the ISP/Provider end and hasn't been provisioned properly.

This may be a silly question but have you plugged in the power cable for the ONT (Dasan box)? What lights come on? You should have four green lights.

Yip
PWR, PON, Internet & LAN were all green when I tested before I got the router from WA. Had a pic of that but can't find it now.
