Hi All,

I dont know much about networking so I need some help if possible:

Here is my situation:

I'm currently connected to my neigbours access point using a normal wireless LAN card ,from my living room, but if I move my pc to my spare room I get no reception .

So I need to somehow boost the signal so that I can connect from my spare room.

Now I would like to know if it is possible to just put a access point where my pc was standing in the living room and then connect to the access point in my living room from my spare room ? . Will that work?

Can the access point just sit there ? . Will it pick up the signal from my neigbour and then boost it into my rooms in my house?

Or is there a cheaper and easier solution ?

Thanks in advance

It could be done, but you'll need to check on the capabilities of your routers.

If you use WDS, you can essentially expand the range of an Access Point by creating a "virtual" connection between the two APs.

Your APs must support WDS in order for this to work.

If you have your neighbour's permission to use the connection there are a couple of things to try. Otherwise, the cheapest and easiest way would be to get an external antenna (one with an exention cord) that you can move around your house for the best reception. That's about as cheap as you gonna get I would think.

I have his full permission we have set up the wireless LAN to share files etc , is there an external attena available for the LAN card, as far as I could see it only seems to be for a AP ?

Not sure, I know the connector where the antenna/cable screws into the card/AP differs between some models.

what's the brand and model number of the card?

Sorry at work at the moment so I dont know the model number but its a Mecer branded 54Mbps PCI Wireless LAN Card

it will, if your card's antenna can be removed, and if that yagi's connector will fit the card's antenna socket

Thanks for your quick answers Goobie ;) ..the antenna can be removed , but how will know if it will fit ? :) ..damn why cant there just be a standard  antenna connection

If I were you, take the wi-fi card to an electronic hobby shop, ask them to find a connector that will fit. Buy the connector. Order whatever yagi you fancy. Remove the original connector and solder the new connector in its place. Crude, but it will work. I think. I hope. OK I don't know, but that's what I would have done.

Take the card to a reputable supplier of "wireless antennas" and get the correct n-type adaptor to fit the card and aerial. A panel antenna would be easy to use than a yagi for you setup

Thanks for all the help guys ....got a 13dbi flat panel antenna today, will see if it works tonight .... I would recommend Miro Distrubitors for any antenna needs , bunch of nice guys , they even made me cable on the fly that would work with my lan card . :) www.miro.co.za
